Sunny Deol Is Back as Ikka, but Akshaye Khanna Won't Return

Sunny Deol is putting the lawyer’s robe back on, but the sequel will have a different energy. Netflix’s legal thriller Ikka is moving forward with a second instalment, and Deol will return as criminal defence lawyer Arjun Mehra aka Ikka. Akshaye Khanna, however, will not reprise his role. According to the report, writing for Ikka 2 has already begun and production is expected to start next year.

What the sequel keeps, and what it resets

The makers are currently shaping the film’s theme and screenplay, with Deol’s character at the centre of a new story. Khanna’s character will not be carried forward.

  • Returning: Sunny Deol as Arjun Mehra aka Ikka.
  • Not returning: Akshaye Khanna’s character.
  • Status: Writing is underway; production expected next year.
  • Platform: Netflix.

The sequel is therefore closer to a fresh chapter than a direct continuation of the first film.

Why the Khanna-Deol pairing mattered

The first Ikka pulled much of its heat from a reunion nearly 30 years after Border. In Siddharth P. Malhotra’s film, Deol played a lawyer pushed into a moral dilemma: to protect his daughter, he had to defend Khanna’s accused criminal Shauryaman Gaur, using every legal manoeuvre to outsmart the prosecution while searching for the truth.

That clash was part of the film’s hook. If the sequel writes Khanna’s role out, it must rebuild the tension around a brand-new case and cast. That’s a legitimate franchise play: keep the hero, refresh the story.

The risk is equally simple. The first film’s marketing and emotional pull leaned on the nostalgia of Deol and Khanna sharing the screen. The sequel will need a strong co-cast and a sharp case to fill that gap.

What fans can expect next

For now, plot and cast details are thin because the project is still in the writing stage. Once the theme and screenplay shape up, more announcements should follow.

The update lands during a crowded phase for both stars. Sunny Deol has already had Border 2 earlier this year and is attached to Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana as Lord Hanuman and to Antony, a Goa-set crime thriller where he reportedly plays a police officer. Akshaye Khanna, after Dhurandhar, is set to play Shukracharya in Mahakali, which forms part of Prasanth Varma’s cinematic universe.

Fans of the original Ikka will be watching whether the new case can match the first film’s courtroom spark without its original rival.
