Udta Teer Day 1: Rs 4.10 crore opening, Chennai tops occupancy

Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s spy comedy Udta Teer opened in cinemas on October 23 to a modest reception, earning Rs 4.10 crore nett on Day 1. The film played across 6,265 shows, with an India gross of Rs 4.83 crore and roughly 1,88,000 people watching, according to Sacnilk.

A quiet start that improved after dark

The Hindi 2D version recorded 15.65 per cent occupancy for the day. Morning shows were the weakest at 5.08 per cent. Audiences trickled in through the afternoon and evening at 14.46 per cent and 13.77 per cent, before night shows became the film’s strongest slot at 25 per cent.

That late lift suggests viewers are showing up in the post-work window, but the overall first-day response still leaves it behind Khurrana’s biggest openings.

Chennai showed up, North and West stayed quiet

City-level numbers show a clear southward tilt. Chennai led Hindi 2D occupancy at 55.7 per cent, followed by Bengaluru at 26 per cent and Hyderabad at 15.5 per cent. By contrast, NCR managed 12 per cent across 966 shows, Mumbai 14.5 per cent across 546 shows, and Ahmedabad 9 per cent across 335 shows.

For a film pitched as a comic take on the spy genre, this city split matters. It tells distributors where the first-weekend buzz is actually converting into footfalls.

Where the opening sits in Khurrana’s career

Udta Teer’s first-day figure is mid-range by Khurrana’s standards. It opened above several of his well-liked titles but below his top commercial openers.

  • Dream Girl 2: Rs 10.69 crore
  • Bala: Rs 10.15 crore
  • Dream Girl: Rs 10.05 crore
  • Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan: Rs 9.55 crore
  • Badhaai Ho: Rs 7.29 crore
  • Article 15: Rs 5.02 crore
  • Udta Teer: Rs 4.10 crore

It also opened ahead of Doctor G (Rs 3.87 crore), Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (Rs 3.75 crore) and Andhadhun (Rs 2.70 crore). Andhadhun is the useful comparison because word of mouth turned it into a long-running hit after a soft start.

What needs to happen now

The film is facing multiple releases, including Tu Hai Meri Kiran, Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar, Doosra and Little Thomas. That makes the weekend critical. India Today’s review gave the film 3.5 stars and noted that “the film adds a comic twist to the familiar spy-thriller setup.” The review credits dramatic irony — the gap between what the characters know and what the audience knows — with keeping the comedy and the spy plot moving together.

If the night-show energy and strong Chennai response carry into Saturday and Sunday, it can still recover. If they don’t, the opening will likely define its run.
