Varun Dhawan Wants a Sidharth Malhotra Rivalry Reunion
On Koffee with Karan, Varun Dhawan didn't wait for the question to end. For a heated rivalry reboot, he wants Sidharth Malhotra opposite him again.

Varun Dhawan didn’t need time to think. On the latest episode of Karan Johar’s Koffee with Karan, Dhawan jumped in before the host could finish asking who he would like to star opposite in a heated rivalry reboot. His answer was immediate: Sidharth Malhotra.
The exchange came during the show’s rapid-fire round, a segment that has launched its share of headline-making moments. Dhawan shared the couch with Janhvi Kapoor, with Arjun Kapoor stopping by in one of his recurring appearances before the game began.
What made the answer feel less like a throwaway and more like a conversation starter was the history behind it. Dhawan and Malhotra made their Bollywood debut together in Johar’s Student of the Year in 2012. Their characters spent much of the film competing, on and off campus, for the attention of Alia Bhatt’s Shanaya. Asked to elaborate, Dhawan kept it simple: “I think there was tension even in SOTY.”
Why a reunion sounds different now
A return to that pairing would not simply replay the original. Over the last decade, both actors have stretched beyond the polished campus-drama image that introduced them.
- Varun Dhawan went from the revenge-driven Badlapur in 2015 to the quieter, grief-stricken October in 2018.
- Sidharth Malhotra moved through the thriller Ek Villain in 2014, the war drama Shershaah in 2021, and his 2026 release The Vvaan.
That range is why a heated rivalry movie now feels more promising than a straightforward sequel. The stakes could sit in a thriller, an action film or a sports drama, without the original campus setting doing all the work.
That debut remains a reference point for millennial Hindi film fans. Back then, the rivalry was glossy and youth-driven. A new version could keep the competitive charge while trading school trophies for sharper, higher-stakes conflict.
The episode’s lighter mood
The latest Koffee with Karan episode was positioned as a comedic break after the previous episode, which featured Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda. That tonal shift may have helped Dhawan’s rapid-fire answer land as playful, but it still pointed toward a real idea: two actors who began as rivals are now experienced enough to make that friction feel adult and cinematic.
No film yet, but a ready-made pitch
There is no announcement attached to the comment, so the pairing remains fan casting for now. Even so, it is a pitch with a built-in hook. The audience already knows the chemistry, and the actors have since built separate fan bases through very different choices.
If a producer picks up the thread, the film would not have to explain why these two should be at odds. It would only have to decide what they are fighting for now. For the moment, the ball is with the filmmakers, but the idea has already left the couch.
