Karthik Subbaraj Has Narrated a Script to Chiranjeevi

The director says he has narrated a script to Chiranjeevi, though no project is confirmed. Here is why the possible pairing is already buzzing.

A Chiranjeevi-Karthik Subbaraj Film Could Be Next

A possible Chiranjeevi-Karthik Subbaraj collaboration is suddenly on the radar. The director revealed on the podcast Permit Room that he has narrated a script to Chiranjeevi, although he was clear that no project has been locked yet.

“I have narrated a script to Chiranjeevi sir, but nothing has been finalized as of now. Hopeful, I will work with him.”

It is a classic controlled reveal: enough to confirm interest, too little to promise a film. No title, genre, cast, or production timeline was shared, so the update is best read as creative interest rather than a signed project.

Why the pairing matters

Chiranjeevi is one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars, a mass hero whose screen presence has carried films for decades. Subbaraj is a Tamil director known for stylised, character-driven storytelling. If the two do join forces, the film would be a genuine cross-industry event: a project born in Tamil cinema’s indie-auteur space fronted by one of Tollywood’s most enduring names.

That is why a single podcast comment is enough to make fans sit up. It suggests both sides are at least talking, and that the conversation is coming from the director himself.

Dorothy, the film Subbaraj is promoting

Subbaraj’s latest release, Dorothy, gives a sense of the texture he brings to a story. Set in Sevapatti in the mid-1980s, it follows school friends Subbu and Karthi. Subbu wins Karthi’s friendship after using Bruce Lee-inspired karate moves to save him from bullies, and the two grow up inside a household governed by Subbu’s father, Whistle Veeraiya, and his brothers. The family’s rigid patriarchal worldview shapes both boys as they age: Karthi becomes hot-headed, while Subbu becomes the peacemaker.

Keerthy Suresh plays Dorothy, a Malayali woman who enters the household as the wife of Subbu’s brother Velu. She becomes someone with whom Subbu can express himself more freely. The film questions whether friendship can survive when two people develop conflicting values and personalities. ETimes rated it four out of five stars, and it did a decent box office run.

Chiranjeevi’s confirmed calendar

On Chiranjeevi’s side, the next confirmed date is Kaaka. Directed by Bobby Kolli, the film is scheduled to reach theatres on 13 January 2027, timed to the Sankranti season.

What we know right now

  • Subbaraj has narrated a script to Chiranjeevi, but nothing is finalised.
  • Dorothy earned four out of five stars from ETimes and did decent box office.
  • Chiranjeevi’s next release, Bobby Kolli’s Kaaka, is set for 13 January 2027, during the Sankranti holiday frame.

What to watch for

If the narration moves ahead, the first signs will be an official announcement, a title reveal and a production house. Until those arrive, the update is a promising conversation, not a commitment.
