DSP’s Yellamma Locks March 5, 2027 Release
Devi Sri Prasad's acting debut Yellamma gets a March 5, 2027 worldwide release in five languages, after Spirit vacates the date.

Devi Sri Prasad, the composer-performer audiences know as DSP, is stepping away from the mixing desk and toward the camera. His acting debut, Yellamma, now has a release date: March 5, 2027.
Director Venu Yeldandi is developing the film as a large-scale venture, and the production team says work is moving steadily toward that date. The drama is described as a heartfelt story rooted in lived local customs, and it is set for a worldwide opening in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada.
The Rockstar gets a screen test
DSP has spent decades moving between mass anthems, soft romantic melodies, folk textures and pop-driven dance tracks. His live performances are known for raw energy, with crowds singing every word back at him. That is precisely why the acting debut is interesting: viewers already trust his music, so the open question is whether his stage charisma can carry a character.
The date has a gap the film can use
The March 5 slot was recently vacated by the Prabhas-starrer Spirit. That gives Yellamma a clear early-spring window and removes one obvious big-ticket rival. A five-language rollout also signals that the makers are planning for a pan-India conversation, not only a Telugu one.
There is also a practical benefit in the timing. A first-time leading actor gets a less crowded corridor, and the film can be discovered on its own terms rather than being drowned out by a heavyweight opener.
Rooted stories are still travelling
Audiences have been rewarding films that grow out of specific community customs. Kantara turned Tulu folk ritual into a national sensation. Yeldandi’s own Balagam told a modest Telangana family story around funeral customs and won hearts without leaning on star power or spectacle. Yellamma arrives while that appetite for honest, place-rooted storytelling is still warm.
The recent track record suggests that audiences do not need a familiar face to buy into a regional story; they need a world that feels specific and true. Yellamma is being positioned on exactly that promise.
For Hindi film fans, the Hindi version is the point of entry. DSP already has decades of playback hits across industries, so the film begins with a ready-made music fandom. The real test is whether those fans show up for the character as much as the composer.
As the release gets closer, three things will drive anticipation:
- a fresh premise drawn from living culture;
- a rooted-drama genre with recent proof of reach;
- DSP’s first lead role after years of audience goodwill.
For now the date is set and the pitch is clear. The next milestone worth tracking is first-look material that shows whether DSP’s transition has the same pull as his music.
