Imran Khan among 400+ detained at anti-CEC protest

Imran Khan was among 400+ people held at the Mumbai anti-CEC protest. Videos of his release and 'Jai Hind' to police are now going viral.

Imran Khan's viral 'Jai Hind' after 400+ held in Mumbai protest

Actor Imran Khan was released after being detained during Saturday’s anti-Chief Election Commissioner protest in Mumbai, and a clip of his parting message to the police is now doing the rounds. In the video, he waves toward officers and shouts “Jai Hind” as they walk away.

The footage was shared by protester Lalit Sharma, who identifies himself as a Bombay High Court lawyer on Instagram. What could have been a small, tense exchange has instead become a widely shared moment online.

What the videos show

Other clips capture a tenser scene, with officers appearing to form a human chain to stop Imran from leaving. His girlfriend, Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayn Marie Khan are seen recording the interaction and asking the police to show a warrant or the relevant documents.

  • Imran waves at police and says “Jai Hind” while officers move away.
  • Lekha Washington and Zayn Marie Khan record the exchange and ask for a warrant or documents.
  • Imran says he was driven around for about two hours before being dropped at an undisclosed location.
  • Lekha claims they weren’t allowed to take a cab back after release.

After being released, Imran said he had no idea why he had been detained. “I honestly don’t know why I have been brought here. They picked us all off the streets,” he said. He added that police told the group “gaadi mein baitho” (sit in the van), and that he and others were driven around for about two hours before being dropped at an undisclosed location.

Why the protest happened

Imran was among more than 400 people detained by the Mumbai Police at August Kranti Maidan and nearby Nana Chowk. The gathering had been called by Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, in support of the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms’ demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.

The protest was linked to concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations of voter-list manipulation. Tushar Gandhi was also detained while on his way to the proposed protest site and was later released.

Police said August Kranti Maidan was not a designated protest venue under a Bombay High Court order, and that preventive action was taken to maintain law and order. Additional personnel, including women officers, were deployed at Shivaji Park in Dadar to prevent another demonstration, while security was tightened at other locations across Mumbai.

Why the moment matters

The viral clip places a familiar Bollywood face inside a charged civic debate, just as questions around electoral rolls and the Chief Election Commissioner’s position sharpen. It also shows how quickly a post-release moment can become the defining image of a protest, especially when the people filming include family and bystanders.

August Kranti Maidan carries particular historical significance as the place from which the Quit India Movement was launched in 1942, which adds another layer to the images emerging from Saturday’s detentions.

The CJP has also called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi over the electoral-roll revision and changes related to Form 6, which is used for voter registration, so this story may not end in Mumbai.
