Jailer 2 Opens at ₹125.25 Crore Worldwide
Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 opens at ₹125.25 crore worldwide, second only to Coolie. First half wins fans; second-half writing draws criticism.

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has taken a mammoth opening at the global box office. The action sequel collected ₹125.25 crore worldwide on day one, as reported by box office tracker Sacnilk, making it the superstar’s second-biggest opening day ever.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner, the film brings Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian after the 2023 hit Jailer. Anirudh Ravichander returns to score the film, with Vijay Kartik Kannan on cinematography and R Nirmal editing.
Where the opening lands
The only Rajinikanth film to open higher is Coolie, which reportedly collected around ₹150 crore globally on its first day last year. That places Jailer 2 ahead of the rest of his filmography on opening-day numbers, even as the next few days will determine whether it becomes a true marathon runner.
Here’s what the early scoreboard looks like:
- Jailer 2: ₹125.25 crore worldwide on day one.
- Coolie: around ₹150 crore worldwide on day one, last year.
- Verdict: a massive start, but only the weekend can show staying power.
What the first reviews are saying
Early responses are mixed-to-positive. Much of the praise is going to the first half, particularly its character introductions, humour and entertainment value, with Namo Narayana’s Moorthy emerging as a breakout. The second half is drawing more criticism for its writing, with some fans noting the screenplay does not stay as tight as the opening stretch.
The ensemble is huge: Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Hrithik Roshan, SJ Suryah, Vijay Sethupathi, Jackie Shroff, Apeksha Porwal, Mithun Chakraborty and Hakkim Shah join the franchise, while Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Vinayakan, Shivarajkumar and Mohanlal return. That cross-industry casting remains one of Nelson’s calling cards.
Why it matters for fans
Opening-day numbers are usually a measure of star pull and fan urgency. In franchise terms, a sequel’s first day reflects the goodwill of the previous film. But because Jailer 2 is also drawing screenplay criticism, the second-weekend trend will be the real test: a front-loaded opening can still fade if casual audiences stay away after mixed chatter.
The sequel’s story places Muthuvel in a quieter life, working at a supermarket near the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. When an old enemy resurfaces, he is pulled back into the aggressive mode fans recognise. That setup gives the film room for the character moments reviewers are enjoying, but also exposes the screenplay to sequel expectations.
For fans planning a theatre watch, the early verdict suggests a simple approach: enjoy the first half and the star turns, keep expectations modest for the second half, and catch Anirudh’s score on a good sound system.
