Karthik Sabesh dies at 37, days after uncle Deva’s death
Tamil actor Karthik Sabesh, son of music director Sabesh and nephew of late composer Deva, died at 37 in Chennai, days after Deva's own death.

Tamil cinema is mourning two losses in quick succession, and the weight of both falls on one family. Actor Karthik Sabesh died on Monday night, October 19, at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 37.
The death came just days after his uncle, veteran composer Deva, passed away on Saturday, October 17. Karthik was the son of music director Sabesh and the nephew of Deva, a lineage that puts the family at the heart of Tamil film music for more than a generation.
What we know so far
Karthik had been unwell for some time and was receiving treatment at the hospital; he died around 11:15 pm. His body was kept at his Chennai home so family, friends and fans could pay their respects. The funeral is scheduled for 4:30 pm on Tuesday, October 20, at the Valasaravakkam burial ground.
- Karthik Sabesh was 37 and is survived by his wife, Ramya Karthik, and their two daughters.
- His uncle Deva died two days earlier, on October 17.
- Karthik appeared in Tamil films including Dum, Vallavan, Pattathu Yaanai and Kulir 100.
- Deva scored more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema.
A composer who defined an era
While Karthik was known as an actor, the family’s wider public identity comes from music. Deva was popularly called Thenisai Thendral and became one of the defining composers of Tamil commercial cinema. His credits include Rajinikanth’s Annamalai, Arunachalam and Baasha, films that still anchor his legacy for many fans.
Deva is also credited with popularising the Gaana style in Tamil film music. Gaana is a rhythm-first, street-rooted sound that grew into a signature of the industry, and Deva composed and sang several songs in the genre himself. That contribution is why his death drew tributes from Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, among others.
Why this matters for film fans
For Hindi film audiences who follow the southern industries, the week is a reminder of how closely family, music and cinema are intertwined. Two deaths in days have pulled focus back to the people behind the songs and supporting roles that make the ecosystem feel familiar.
Karthik’s screen appearances were part of that ecosystem, even if his name lived at the edges of the frame more often than the centre. In a moment like this, the credits matter: fans get to say goodbye to an actor and to a composer in the same breath.
Those who want to pay respects can do so at the Chennai residence before Tuesday’s funeral. The family is grieving privately, and the industry is likely to share more tributes as the news settles.
