Why Rajinikanth Said No to Baasha 2 and Petta 2
Rajinikanth explains his sequel test: he rejected Baasha 2 and Petta 2, then found Jailer's OTT ending opened a bigger story worth continuing.

At the Jailer 2 Super Show, Rajinikanth gave fans a rare look at the rule that decides which of his films can become a franchise. The superstar said he usually avoids sequels because they tend to replay a hit rather than extend it.
Two big sequels that never happened
Rajinikanth revealed he was offered a Baasha 2, and director Karthik Subbaraj approached him for a Petta 2 that would have extended Vijay Sethupathi’s character. Neither idea convinced him.
He summarised his hesitation at the event: “I’m generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part, add a little extra flavour, and turn it into another film.” The actor’s point was simple: a follow-up should add more than familiar elements.
The Jailer ending that changed the decision
What made Jailer 2 different was a rewatch. After Jailer arrived on OTT, Rajinikanth watched it again and noticed something in the final stretch. When he is about to finish Varma’s character, Varma warns that a bigger network exists and that they would not spare him either.
That open warning gave the film what Rajinikanth considers a genuine sequel hook. He said that made the story “perfect for a sequel”.
A clear runway for Jailer 2
Nelson Dilipkumar returns to direct Jailer 2 with Rajinikanth in the lead. The actor also said Nelson initially planned a Telugu project before putting it aside to focus on this film. Meanwhile, Om: Chapter 1, the Dhanush and Mammootty action drama, has reportedly shifted from an October 16 release to November 26, avoiding a box-office clash with Jailer 2.
What it means for the audience
- Rajinikanth does not sign sequels just because the first film was a blockbuster.
- Jailer 2 continues from Varma’s warning about a larger network, not from a repeated formula.
- With Om: Chapter 1 moving, Jailer 2 gets the October 16 date to itself.
Why this matters for sequel culture
Bollywood and the south industries often treat a hit as an automatic green light for part two. Rajinikanth’s framing is different: the original story must leave something unresolved. By saying no to Baasha 2 and Petta 2, he avoided sequels that would have been more about brand recall than narrative necessity.
The Jailer rewatch shows how an OTT release can change a creator’s perspective. Had he only remembered the theatrical experience, the Varma warning may have felt like a regular closing beat. Watching it again made the open network impossible to ignore.
What fans can do before release
If you are planning to catch Jailer 2, revisit the first film’s final act before October 16. Pay attention to Varma’s last warning: it is the thread the sequel is built on.
