Vijay Deverakonda Bets on Ranabaali to End Rough Patch
Vijay Deverakonda is backing Ranabaali as his comeback as the period action drama with Rashmika Mandanna opens on October 16.

Vijay Deverakonda is not treating Ranabaali as just another release. At the film’s pre-release event, he framed the period action drama as the project that could end a run of underperforming films and answer those who had written him off. The film pairs him with his wife, Rashmika Mandanna, and is directed by Rahul Sankrityan.
Why Deverakonda is talking comeback
Deverakonda told the gathering he had written a letter promising to return, even while some people seemed to take pleasure in his rough patch. He kept the on-stage promise direct: “I reminded my naysayers that I will be bloody back when I say it.” He added that, with this story, the director had built a base for him once again.
He also kept the focus on what an individual can control. “Confidence in ourselves and dedication to work are the only things in our hands,” he said. That line matters because it separates an actor’s effort from the result a box office decides.
What Ranabaali is about
Ranabaali is a fictional story set in 1870s South India, during the Great Famine of 1876–78, one of the deadliest famines in colonial India. Deverakonda plays a rebellious warrior who confronts a British commissioner while protecting his people. Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma, his wife and partner in the rebellion. Arnold Vosloo, known to audiences for The Mummy, plays the main antagonist.

A direct date with Jailer 2
Ranabaali was originally scheduled for September 11, then moved to October 16. That new date puts it in the same weekend corridor as Rajinikanth’s much-anticipated Jailer 2, which arrives a day earlier on October 15. For Deverakonda, the comeback talk will now meet a high-profile box-office test, not just a promotional one.
What a comeback needs beyond a line
The “bloody back” line will travel, but the film still has to deliver on period spectacle and the emotional arc between warrior and Jayamma. Confidence is in an actor’s hands; box-office results are not. For fans, the draw is a big-screen famine-era action drama with a real-life couple in a rebellion story. If the period detail and the confrontation with the colonial officer land, Ranabaali could give Deverakonda the momentum he is publicly asking for. The film opens in theatres on Friday; this weekend’s numbers will show whether the promise holds.
