Comrade Kalyan Review: Sree Vishnu’s Comedy Scores 3/5

Sree Vishnu and Satya keep this Naxalite-backdrop Telugu comedy fun despite a slow start and weak climax; read our 3/5 verdict.

Sree Vishnu's Comrade Kalyan Scores 3/5

Telugu star Sree Vishnu is back in familiar territory—taking a premise that sounds serious and giving it a playful, fan-first spin. Comrade Kalyan, which released on 9 October 2026, is built around a Naxalite backdrop but plays out as a comedy entertainer, and the film has landed a 3/5 rating from 123telugu.com.

For fans who follow Hindi cinema but keep an eye on the southern industries, this is a useful pointer: Telugu comedy often travels on star chemistry rather than heavy plot, and Sree Vishnu has built a niche with offbeat subjects in Tollywood.

What the film is about

Kalyan (Sree Vishnu) runs a leased movie theatre in his village with a friend. When Sithara (Mahima Nambiar), an Odia woman who helped him, enters the picture, Kalyan falls for her—and in trying to win her love, he ends up inside a Naxalite group. From there, the story is about how he gets out of a life-or-death mess.

Director Janakiram Marella keeps the tone light even when the setting isn’t. Writers Bhanu Bhogavarapu and Nandu Savarigana add comedy around the central conflict, and the result is less political thriller and more weekend time-pass.

What works and what doesn’t

The biggest reason to buy a ticket is the combination of Sree Vishnu and Satya. Their scenes generate most of the laughs, and Sree Vishnu balances the comedy with the emotional beats his character needs. Mahima Nambiar, Sudarshan, Radhika, Upendra Limaye and Shine Tom Chacko are adequate in their roles.

But the film takes its time to warm up:

  • Slow start: The early stretches before the hero’s arrival feel dull, and the character introductions aren’t strong.
  • Uneven comedy: Some initial jokes don’t land, and dubbing slips show up in places.
  • Second-half drift: The flow dips after the interval, the elevation song could have hit harder, and the climax isn’t fully convincing.

Technically, Sai Sriram’s cinematography is rich, and the production values are decent. Vijay Bulganin’s songs and background score are serviceable, though a stronger BGM in key moments would have helped. Tighter editing in a few places could have quickened the pace.

Our verdict

Comrade Kalyan is a time-pass comedy entertainer with enough fun moments to justify a theatre visit, especially for fans of Sree Vishnu and Satya. It isn’t a polished political film, and the start and climax wobble, but the entertainment value is there. If you’re looking for a decent, no-stress watch this weekend, this one is a reasonable pick.

Rating: 3/5.
