Abhijeet on Daler Row: No Lip-Sync, Even for Rs 35 Lakh
Abhijeet Bhattacharya wades into the Daler Mehndi live-performance row, pledging to always sing live and urging fans to reject lip-sync.

Abhijeet Bhattacharya has stepped into the live-performance debate sparked by Daler Mehndi’s halted show last month—without ever taking the Punjabi singer’s name. In a clip from his Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava 2026 performance, the playback veteran says audiences should refuse to accept artists who simply move their lips on stage.
What Abhijeet said on stage
Speaking in Hindi, Abhijeet referenced the recent incident where a minister walked on stage and accused a singer of not performing live. “He spoke the truth,” Abhijeet said in the widely shared video. He then made a direct promise to the Chhattisgarh crowd: however strained, tired or off-key his voice may be, he will sing live.
“I will never simply move my lips in the name of singing,” he said, adding that the audience pays hard-earned money and deserves that respect.
The Daler Mehndi row, briefly
Last month, Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal stopped Daler Mehndi mid-performance at a state cultural event. The minister questioned the singer on stage and later told ANI that Daler had been paid Rs 35 lakh to perform. Daler’s brother Mika Singh and several other celebrities criticised the minister for disrespecting the artist; the minister refused to apologise.
Why this matters to fans
For Hindi film fans, the line between playback magic and a live show is the whole bargain. A ticket buys a shared room, a visible effort, and a voice that can crack or soar. When that line blurs, the audience is left paying for a music video in person.
A practical way to look at it before your next concert:
- Check recent fan clips. Does the vocal actually shift from night to night, or is it identical every time?
- Ask organisers. A simple “is the set fully live?” usually gets a straight answer.
- Leave room for a bad night. Illness and bad sound can affect a performer; that is different from habitual lip-syncing.
What comes next
Abhijeet’s stance adds a veteran voice to a conversation that has divided the music industry. Some artists have defended Daler, pointing to his health on the day, while the minister has stood by the public call-out. For fans, the takeaway is clearer than the feud: ask for what you paid for, and support performers who promise to be real.
