After 14 Years, Student of the Year Goes Spooky

Karan Johar turns Student of the Year into a spooky JioHotstar series with Shanaya Kapoor on OTT, premiering November 13.

After 14 Years, Student of the Year Goes Spooky

Fourteen years after Student of the Year first hit theatres, Karan Johar is taking the franchise somewhere it has never gone before: into the dark. On the exact anniversary of the 2012 film, the filmmaker announced Student of the Year: After Dark, a JioHotstar series that trades the franchise’s sunlit college-romance template for mystery and suspense.

A campus universe gets a genre makeover

The original arrived in 2012 and introduced audiences to a glossy world of designer uniforms, dance-offs and love triangles. A 2019 sequel, led by Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria, kept the coming-of-age charm alive. Now, with After Dark, Johar appears ready to subvert the very formula he built.

Johar marked the anniversary with a social-media note, calling nostalgia “working overtime” as the franchise moves “AFTER DARK.” He added that the beloved SOTY journey is moving forward in an unexpected direction.

Shanaya Kapoor leads the new chapter

Shanaya Kapoor will make her OTT debut in the series, and reports point to a demanding double-role performance. That is a significant leap from the campus-queen archetype fans may expect. Johar described the casting as a defining moment, saying she is not just stepping into the spotlight but “shattering it.”

Directing duties go to Reema Maya, with Johar returning solely as producer under his Dharmatic Entertainment banner. The creative handover matters: Maya’s involvement signals a sharper, moodier sensibility than the franchise has shown before. The first-look visuals lean into secrets, simmering tension and layered characters, not another coming-of-age love story.

What we know so far

  • Series: Student of the Year: After Dark
  • Platform: JioHotstar
  • Star: Shanaya Kapoor, in a reported double role and OTT debut
  • Director: Reema Maya; producer: Dharmatic Entertainment
  • Premiere: November 13
  • Milestone: announced exactly 14 years after the original 2012 release

Why this matters for Hindi film fans

For an audience that grew up on SOTY’s candy-coloured version of school life, After Dark is both a nostalgia play and a creative reset. Streaming platforms have been betting on familiar IP to cut through an increasingly crowded market, and this series extends a known title while giving a new actor and director room to reshape it. The risk is whether fans accept a spooky version of St Teresa’s.

This is also the latest example of a beloved Bollywood property being reimagined for streaming. A series can explore character depths a two-hour campus film cannot, and the After Dark title promises more than a superficial makeover. It positions SOTY as an anthology-style universe, where each chapter can shift genre while holding on to its iconic school setting.

If you plan to watch, revisit the 2012 original and the 2019 sequel to refresh the franchise’s arc. Then stream the first-look visuals to gauge just how far the new series is willing to go. With a November 13 premiere, you have just under a month to prepare.
