Vidya Balan Got 7 M.S. Subbulakshmi Offers, One Condition
Vidya Balan says seven filmmakers offered her an M.S. Subbulakshmi biopic after her tribute shoot—but she asked for permissions before considering any.

The question of who should play M.S. Subbulakshmi has never really gone away. Now Vidya Balan has put a number to it: seven offers, all asking her to step into the Carnatic legend’s life. Yet she kept one condition front and centre before any conversation could begin.
Seven offers, one condition
In a new interview with Variety India, Balan said the offers began after her 2024 tribute photoshoot honouring the singer. The images became their own audition; filmmakers saw the resemblance, the poise and the fan response, and they came calling. But Balan did not sign on.
Her condition, as quoted by Variety India, was simple: “if you get the permissions required, then I shall consider it.” Otherwise, she said, she would not be able to do the film.
The project that got away
This was not her first brush with the role. Balan recalled that she was supposed to make a film on M.S. Subbulakshmi with director Rajiv Menon around 2012 or 2013. A stay order stopped the project, and she described the experience as heartbreaking.
That history likely shaped the rule she holds now. A performer can be fully ready, but a real icon’s story needs legal, estate and family clearances before it can reach the screen. Enthusiasm is not enough.
Why the timing matters
The conversation resurfaced because an official M.S. Subbulakshmi biopic is now in the works with Rashmika Mandanna, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri and scored by Anirudh. For some fans, the casting reopened an old debate; for others, it closed one. Many still see Balan as the dream choice, while another section is curious to see Rashmika test herself in a demanding real-life part.
Balan is also in the middle of a high-profile run. She is currently on screen as Kantha in Jailer 2, a negative role that has drawn attention, and she is confirmed as the main villain in Jailer 3. That makes the biopic discussion less about her availability and more about the principle she has chosen to stand on.
- Seven offers came after the 2024 tribute shoot.
- Her condition: makers must secure permissions first.
- Earlier attempt: a Rajiv Menon project was stopped by a stay order.
- Now: Rashmika Mandanna leads the official biopic with Gowtam Tinnanuri and Anirudh.
What Balan’s stand means for biopics
Call it a permissions test: talent fit may create buzz, but legal clearance decides whether a project moves forward. A stay order is a legal directive that pauses a project until the disputes around it are resolved. When a major star says “permissions first,” it signals to producers that casting chatter is not the same as a green light.
The stakes are especially high with a figure like M.S. Subbulakshmi, because the story involves not just one family or estate but a larger legacy that fans feel protective about. A misstep on rights can stall a film, change its script, or stop it entirely.
For now, the official biopic has its lead. The next question is whether the permissions, the storytelling and the music can live up to the legend itself.
