Salman Khan’s Maatrubhumi Skips Republic Day and Independence Day

Salman Khan's Maatrubhumi will not chase a Republic Day or Independence Day release, sources say, while CBFC clearance is still pending.

Salman Khan's Maatrubhumi Skips Republic Day and Independence Day

Salman Khan’s next film has made a release-date decision that goes against Bollywood’s usual holiday instincts. Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace is not being lined up for Republic Day or Independence Day, even though those would be the obvious slots for a story rooted in the India-China border conflict.

According to a report by India Today, the film is still awaiting clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification. But once it gets the go-ahead, the team is reportedly not planning to grab a national holiday opening. The reason is less about logistics and more about the film’s core belief.

“Patriotism is not something to be celebrated on just one particular day.”

The line, attributed to an industry source, sets up a different kind of release conversation: should a patriotic film wait for a patriotic date, or should the story itself carry the day?

Why this breaks the holiday playbook

In the Hindi film business, 26 January and 15 August are not just dates. They offer extended weekends and a mood that can lift a film’s opening. For a film with the Battle of Galwan as its backdrop, either date would look like a natural fit on paper.

By stepping away from both windows, Khan and the makers are signalling confidence in the material. The source added that Khan believes “love for your country should be felt, expressed and celebrated every single day,” making the release date a detail rather than the message.

The essentials

  • Film: Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace
  • Director: Apoorva Lakhia
  • Cast: Salman Khan and Chitrangada Singh in the lead
  • Backdrop: The Battle of Galwan
  • Status: Awaiting CBFC clearance; no final release date announced
  • Original plan: 17 April 2026

India Today also reports that the film is not intended to be a war saga. The war remains in the backdrop, while the larger focus is on family bonds, the delicacy of relationships, and the development of friendships.

What this means for fans

After the wait around certification, the real watch is now for the final date. Earlier reports had suggested the film’s India-China subject matter drew extra CBFC attention, contributing to the delay. The makers have not confirmed a launch window.

For fans, the absence of a holiday release may actually be a good sign. It suggests the team is prioritising the story over the calendar, and that the promotional tone will lean into everyday patriotism rather than a single-day event.

Whatever date is eventually chosen, the message is already clear: for this film, every day is a patriotic day.
