Radhika Apte calls out action-role double standard for Alia Bhatt

Radhika Apte questions why female actors face physique scrutiny in action roles while men rarely do, and defends Alia Bhatt's Alpha avatar as fit.

Radhika Apte: female action stars still get judged first

Radhika Apte has joined the conversation around Alia Bhatt’s action role in Alpha with a blunt question: why is a female star’s body up for debate when male action leads are rarely held to the same standard?

In an interview with India Today, Radhika said the criticism around Alia’s physique says more about lingering gender bias than about her readiness for the part.

The double standard she called out

Radhika contrasted the easy acceptance male action stars get with the scrutiny Alia has faced. She wasn’t interested in being polite about it.

“Your actors who are doing action have massive paunches and all, and Alia is bloody fit. I mean, please.”

The remark was made in the context of Alpha, the Yash Raj Films spy-universe title directed by Shiv Rawail. It stars Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, with Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in key roles. The reaction to Alia’s look has become a talking point even before the film’s release.

Why the bias persists

Asked why the double standard exists, Radhika pointed to traditional attitudes that still shape many Indian households.

  • Women are often expected to look, dress, behave and marry a certain way.
  • Very few people are comfortable with the freedom daughters are rightfully claiming.
  • That mindset, she argued, also shows up in the kind of content people watch.

Her explanation places the debate beyond one actor or one film. If audiences still carry fixed ideas about how women should appear, those attitudes will follow female stars into the action genre too. That matters as YRF builds out its spy universe, where physical transformation is part of the package for any lead.

What this means for fans

For Bollywood fans, this is more than a passing celebrity spat. It is a test of whether female-led action can be judged on performance, stunt work and star power rather than waistlines.

Radhika’s own slate is busy. She will next be seen in the Netflix series Akka with Keerthy Suresh, premiering on October 30.

When Alpha eventually arrives, the audience response will show whether the conversation around its female lead has shifted from bodies to craft.
