Salman Khan Eyed for Kind-Hearted Cop in Khalnayak Returns
Reports say Salman Khan is being considered for a kind-hearted cop role in Subhash Ghai's Khalnayak Returns, opposite Sanjay Dutt. Casting is not final.

Bollywood loves a sequel, but this one has a special pull. Reports suggest Salman Khan is being considered for a role in Khalnayak Returns, Subhash Ghai’s long-gestating follow-up to the 1993 cult classic — a move that would bring Salman and Sanjay Dutt back into the same frame.
The reported role: a kind-hearted cop
According to a Mid-Day report cited by The Times of India, Ghai and his writing team are developing a special part with Salman in mind. The character is described as a kind-hearted police officer who stands by Sanjay Dutt’s character and helps him through the story.
That framing is interesting. The original Khalnayak gave us Sanjay Dutt’s Ballu, a magnetic but morally slippery figure. A good Samaritan cop would offer a clean emotional centre for a sequel — and a ready-made reason for two huge stars to share the screen.
The nostalgia factor
The 1993 original paired Sanjay Dutt with Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit, and its music and anti-hero energy helped it travel well beyond its release. A sequel has been discussed for years, so every sign of movement gets fans talking.
Ghai has always loved big-canvas storytelling, and Khalnayak Returns sounds designed to revive that energy for an audience raised on digital and multiplex content. The casting conversation itself is a reminder that star chemistry is still a strong hook in Hindi cinema.
For Bollywood, this is part of a wider pattern: reaching back to familiar titles and faces to reduce risk at the box office and on streaming platforms. Adding Salman to a cult property is not just casting news — it is a commercial signal.
A role built for a star, not a contract yet
- The screenplay is still being written, so Salman’s casting has not been finalised.
- If he signs, this would be his second film with Subhash Ghai after 2008’s Yuvvraaj.
- The part is being shaped with Salman in mind, rather than offered as a generic cop role.
Salman’s immediate calendar
While Khalnayak Returns simmers, Salman is gearing up for his next release, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace. Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the war drama is inspired by the real-life clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the Galwan Valley and also stars Chitrangda Singh, Ankur Bhatia and Abhilash Chaudhary.
The original casting matters here too: Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit gave Khalnayak its emotional stakes. A sequel would have to decide how much of that world to carry forward, and that is exactly why the screenplay is the first gate.
For Total Filmi readers, the right posture is cautious excitement. The names make this feel like an event, but until Ghai locks the script and Salman says yes, it is a rumour wearing a uniform.
