Tu Mil Jaaye divides fans as Pathaan echo trails SRK’s King
Shah Rukh Khan's birthday release Tu Mil Jaaye from King has fans split over its Pathaan-like sound, Ed Sheeran rap and SRK-Deepika chemistry.

A midnight birthday drop
Shah Rukh Khan marked his birthday on November 2 with the midnight release of “Tu Mil Jaaye,” the first song from Siddharth Anand’s King. The romantic-action track reunites him with Deepika Padukone and arrives ahead of the film’s December 24 worldwide release. Sachin-Jigar composed the song, Kumaar wrote the lyrics, and Arijit Singh and Madhubanti Bagchi lead the vocals. Ed Sheeran adds an English rap, and Piyush-Shazia handled the choreography.
The video leans on familiar Bollywood territory: SRK begins with a voiceover setting up the lover-vs-killer theme, then moves into peppy romance, dance and bursts of action. It closes with his dialogue: “This time, a fire is raging in my heart. It will not stop until it has set the world ablaze.”
Two very different listening rooms
Social media has split sharply. For admirers, the song’s biggest hook is the SRK-Arijit pairing, with fans calling the track “a sure-shot chartbuster” and praising the chemistry between Shah Rukh and Deepika. Some also enjoyed Sheeran’s rap, saying the song grew on them after repeated plays.
But a large section of the audience heard something more familiar. Several listeners said the groove and treatment echo Pathaan and other Siddharth Anand films, with one fan asking why the song gives “vibe like PATHAAN movie songs.” Others were harder on the video: the green-screen backdrops, flat lighting, quick transitions and Deepika’s styling all drew criticism. The most pointed complaint was reserved for the sight of SRK lip-syncing to Sheeran’s voice, which one viewer called a “bizarre cognitive dissonance.”
Why the mixed response matters
King is not a small film. It brings SRK and Deepika back together after Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Happy New Year and Pathaan, and it is produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures. The supporting cast includes Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jaideep Ahlawat and Raghav Juyal. With a Christmas release, it is positioned as a big-screen event, so the first song is the first real temperature check.
- What fans love: Arijit’s vocals, the SRK-Deepika pairing, Sheeran’s rap and the song’s romantic-action mix.
- What critics point to: a Pathaan-like sound, rushed green-screen visuals, jumpy editing and awkward lip-sync.
- What it means: the track is getting attention, but the film now has to prove it is more than familiar Siddharth Anand material.
What to do before the verdict
“Tu Mil Jaaye” is available on streaming platforms, and the music video is live on the Zee Music Company and T-Series YouTube channels. If you want to judge for yourself, listen once for the melody and once with the video on: the split reaction is partly about the song and partly about how it is shot. King releases in cinemas on December 24, so expect more songs and at least one heavier action glimpse before then.
