KC Bokadia recalls Manoj Kumar bumping into Dharmendra on set
KC Bokadia remembers the Maidaan-E-Jung song shoot where Manoj Kumar accidentally bumped into Dharmendra, and the one line that kept the moment calm.

A tiny on-set collision between two Hindi cinema giants could have turned into an awkward standoff. Filmmaker KC Bokadia has opened up about the moment Manoj Kumar accidentally bumped into Dharmendra while shooting a song for Maidaan-E-Jung, and why one quiet line settled it.
The shoulder bump and the look
Speaking to ANI, Bokadia recalled that there were already some problems between the two veteran actors when he brought them together for the 1995 film. Dharmendra, a close friend, initially asked him “Boss, why?” about the casting, but agreed after Bokadia reassured him.
The flashpoint came during a song shoot. Manoj Kumar accidentally hit Dharmendra with his shoulder. “Dharam ji gave me a look at me, and I said, ‘Leave him,’” Bokadia said. The moment passed without escalating.
Why the memory matters now
The anecdote has extra weight because both legends are no longer with us. Manoj Kumar, known as “Bharat Kumar” for his patriotic films, died on April 4, 2025, at 87 in Mumbai. Dharmendra, Hindi cinema’s “He-Man”, passed away on November 24, 2025, after a career that stretched across romantic, comic and action roles.
The film itself is a snapshot of a particular 1990s Bollywood moment:
- Film: Maidaan-E-Jung (1995), directed by KC Bokadia
- Lead cast: Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar, Akshay Kumar, Jaya Prada and Karisma Kapoor
- Supporting cast: Mukesh Khanna, Amrish Puri and Gulshan Grover
A smaller, human detail
Manoj Kumar became a defining face of patriotic cinema with Upkar, Shaheed and Purab Aur Paschim, and also worked as a director and lyricist. Dharmendra remains beloved for Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Anupama and many more. The fact that two such different screen energies shared a frame is why fans still revisit these multi-starrers.
The shoulder bump is a small, human detail. It reminds us that even seasoned stars had their tensions, and that a director sometimes had to be a peacemaker before he could call action.
