Anil Kapoor filmed 1988’s Tezaab at Mannat before SRK bought it

Anil Kapoor recalls shooting 1988's Tezaab at the Bandra property that became Shah Rukh Khan's Mannat. The old friends reunite in King on December 24.

Anil Kapoor shot Tezaab at Mannat before it became SRK's home

Anil Kapoor just gave Hindi film fans a story that connects two very different eras of Bollywood. Appearing on Star Plus’s reality show India Ke Top 1%, the actor recalled that long before Bandra’s Mannat became Shah Rukh Khan’s landmark home, it was a working film set—for Anil’s 1988 hit Tezaab.

During a conversation about prize money and dream homes, a contestant mentioned wanting a house like Mannat. That prompted Anil to share the memory: “I remember him buying Mannat right before my eyes. I had also shot for Tezaab at that property, before it became his home.”

A friendship that started before Deewana

Anil said his bond with Shah Rukh goes back to before SRK’s big-screen debut. The two met while Anil was shooting Benaam Badshah, and Anil saw something in the younger actor immediately.

“When I saw him and looked into his eyes, I felt that he would become a very big star,” Anil recalled, adding that their friendship only grew from there.

Shah Rukh made his film debut with Deewana in 1992 after starting on television in the late 1980s, but his Mumbai years began earlier. In 1991, he lived in a flat with friends; Anil remembers meeting him on Carter Road, where SRK would talk about owning a grand, sea-facing bungalow one day.

From a Carter Road flat to Bandstand

That dream became real in 2000 when Shah Rukh bought the sea-facing bungalow at Bandra’s Bandstand. The home has since become a destination for fans, and it is currently under renovation; the family moved out temporarily last year.

For Anil, the property’s past gives the story an extra layer. He had filmed Tezaab there years before Shah Rukh made it his own, a small piece of filmi history now folded into one of Bollywood’s most photographed addresses.

A timeline of the friendship

  • 1988: Anil Kapoor shoots Tezaab at the property later known as Mannat.
  • 1991: Shah Rukh Khan moves to Mumbai and lives in a flat with friends.
  • 1992: SRK makes his film debut in Deewana.
  • 2000: He buys the Bandstand bungalow now called Mannat.
  • December 24: Anil and SRK reunite on screen in King.

Why the timing matters

The memory arrives just as the two actors are preparing to share the screen again. They previously appeared together in the 1995 film Trimurti, which did not make an impact at the box office. Now, Anil is set to reunite with Shah Rukh in King, directed by Siddharth Anand and scheduled for a December 24 theatrical release.

The cast also includes Deepika Padukone, Suhana Khan, Rani Mukerji, Arshad Warsi, Jaideep Ahlawat and Abhishek Bachchan. For fans, Anil’s anecdote adds a warm, full-circle note ahead of the holiday release: an old friend who once predicted SRK’s stardom is back in the frame.
