Malamaal Weekly 2 moves ahead without Priyadarshan, Riteish
Priyadarshan confirms he will not direct Malamaal Weekly 2, and Riteish Deshmukh is no longer attached, leaving the sequel's team unclear.

Priyadarshan steps away
The proposed follow-up to the 2006 hit Malamaal Weekly will have to continue without the filmmaker who shaped the original. Priyadarshan, who wrote and directed the comedy, has confirmed he is not involved in the sequel. Speaking to Variety India, he said, “I am not doing it. I have decided not to do any sequel.”
That single line closes the door on any return to the world of Lilaram, Ballu and the lottery ticket.
Riteish Deshmukh exits too
Riteish Deshmukh, who played Kanhaiya in the original, is also no longer attached to the project. The sequel was announced earlier this year, but the production has not shared a new cast or creative team. Losing the director and a central actor in one update turns a nostalgic sequel into a genuinely open question.
The ensemble fans remember
The original film worked because of its casting. Here is a quick look at the key players:
- Paresh Rawal as Lilaram, also called Leela
- Om Puri as Balwant Singh Ballu, and the fake Joseph Anthony Fernandes
- Riteish Deshmukh as Kanhaiya
- Arbaaz Khan as lottery inspector Jayesh Agarwal
- Rajpal Yadav as Bajey Singh Bajbahadur
- Asrani as Chokheylal, Kanhaiya’s father
- Shakti Kapoor as Joseph
Malamaal Weekly took its inspiration from the 1998 comedy Waking Ned and later reached audiences through regional adaptations such as Bhagyalakshmi Bumper Draw, Aamayum Muyalum and Dakota Picture.
Why this matters for Hindi film fans
Sequels to older comedies often trade on the original’s voice. Priyadarshan’s brand of farce was a big part of why the original clicked. If he is not directing, the sequel has to prove it can capture that tone with a new team. That is a bigger challenge than simply reusing the title.
A changed starting point
The original ensemble was full of performers who could carry a scene. With Priyadarshan and Riteish out, the remaining cast has not been detailed. Whether actors like Paresh Rawal or Rajpal Yadav return is still unconfirmed, so the sequel currently known as Malamaal Weekly 2 is a title waiting for its team.
What happens next
For now, the sequel has a recognised title but no confirmed director or cast. Priyadarshan’s decision not to make any sequel means the franchise will need a new comic voice, while Riteish’s departure leaves the role of Kanhaiya open. The next announcement from the producers will reveal whether they can rebuild the original’s comic tone or whether the project quietly changes direction.
