Melanie Laurent Joins Saif and Vidya in Batra’s Long Years Ago
French star Melanie Laurent boards Ritesh Batra's 1991-set family dramedy with Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan, marking a Parineeta reunion.

French actor and filmmaker Melanie Laurent, best known as Shosanna Dreyfus in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, has joined Ritesh Batra’s new feature Long Years Ago. She will appear alongside Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan in the comedy-drama, which is now shooting in Mumbai.
The film is set in 1991 and, in the words of its official description, follows “a family that has gone too long without saying the things that matter.” That tension is familiar territory for Batra, whose films often live in small domestic worlds, silences and the weight of what goes unsaid.
A Parineeta reunion, decades later
For Hindi film fans, the immediate pull is the reunion of Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan. Parineeta was Vidya’s first film, which gives this pairing a full-circle feel. Vidya said the project’s honesty made it special, and she was excited to work with Saif again after her very first film.
Saif said he was excited to present audiences with what he called a deeply moving story. Batra said he was honored to watch actors he admires bring characters close to his heart to life.
The Batra factor
Batra’s name signals a clear sensibility. He broke through with The Lunchbox, starring Irrfan and Nimrat Kaur, which premiered at Cannes and became one of the notable Indian releases that year. He went on to direct Our Souls at Night with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, and returned to Mumbai with Photograph, featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra.
Laurent’s casting extends that pattern of quiet, performance-led choices. She said she first met Batra fifteen years ago at the Marrakech Film Festival, and the two had shared a dream of meeting in Mumbai one day. That long connection could be the film’s secret ingredient if it shows up on screen.
Why this cast is worth watching
- A crossover star: Laurent has built an international career in films led by Inglourious Basterds and other productions.
- A director in his zone: A 1991 Mumbai family story sits close to The Lunchbox and Photograph.
- A nostalgic pairing: Saif and Vidya together again after Parineeta, the film that introduced Vidya to Hindi cinema.
No release date has been announced yet, so the practical step for fans is to mark Long Years Ago for later and watch how Batra places Laurent inside a Hindi-language family dramedy. If the official description is accurate, this should be less about spectacle and more about the conversations a family finally cannot avoid.
