Ranbir’s Ramayana tax-free in Bengal ahead of Nov 5 release
West Bengal has declared Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana tax-free on Vijayadashami, days before the Ranbir Kapoor epic opens in theatres on November 5.

The festive season just got a little more filmi in West Bengal. On Vijayadashami, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana will be tax-free in the state, days before its scheduled theatrical release on November 5.
What the tax-free tag means
For audiences, a tax-free screening generally trims the entertainment-tax component on tickets, making a family outing to the big screen a little more affordable during a high-spirited festive window. With Vijayadashami and the surrounding festive season drawing families to theatres, the timing could help the epic convert anticipation into opening footfalls.
The announcement also works as a state-level signal of support for a project already being watched closely for its scale, casting and ambition.
The faces behind the epic
Ramayana assembles a sprawling ensemble around its central trio.
- Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram
- Sai Pallavi as Sita
- Yash as Ravana
- Ravi Dubey as Lakshman
Rakul Preet Singh, Kunal Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Faisal Malik also feature in key roles, with Nitesh Tiwari directing.
Yash’s request to the audience
At the film’s pre-release event in Hyderabad, Yash asked viewers to judge the project as a whole rather than focus on small visual-effects flaws. He praised producer Namit Malhotra for backing an ambitious Indian film, saying Namit had “gambled his reputation and money” to take the story to a global platform.
“Please don’t try to find small faults in the VFX,” Yash said, adding that losing backers like Namit now could set the industry back by years.
The comment captures the larger stakes around Ramayana: it is being positioned as a retelling of an enduring epic and as a showcase for Indian cinema’s global ambitions.
The release date to watch
Ramayana arrives in theatres on November 5. The tax-free move gives the film a festive tailwind in West Bengal, but the fuller picture will emerge when audiences respond to the complete theatrical experience.
