Ranbir Kapoor plans to back streaming shows without acting

Ranbir Kapoor is reading scripts for long-format streaming series he plans to produce without acting, adding a star producer to Indian OTT.

Ranbir Kapoor plans to produce long-format OTT shows

Ranbir Kapoor’s next role may not be on any call sheet. The actor, whose career has been built on big-screen turns, is preparing to move into streaming as a producer. Reports say he plans to back long-format OTT series under his own banner, focusing on stories beyond the usual theatrical template.

What the plan actually is

According to Variety India, Ranbir has been going through scripts and intends to back projects without appearing in them himself. He is looking to collaborate with emerging writers and directors on high-concept material. That creator-first approach is different from the star-vehicle model that still drives much of mainstream Hindi cinema.

The detail matters. If a star of Ranbir’s scale backs a show but does not act in it, the series must stand on its writing, direction and cast. That is a stronger test of a producer’s taste than simply lending his face to a project.

He already has producing muscle

Ranbir is not new to the credits. He formed Picture Shuru Productions with Anurag Basu for the musical comedy-mystery Jagga Jasoos, and he co-produced Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva. Streaming, however, demands longer arcs and season-based storytelling, which is a different skill from a one-off film release.

His wife Alia Bhatt has the playbook. Her banner, Eternal Sunshine Productions, run with Shaheen Bhatt, has backed Don’t Be Shy on Prime Video, Darlings on Netflix and the film Jigra. Those projects show a pattern of choosing ideas that can live without a major star in every frame. Ranbir’s move reads as a similar bet on stories over star power.

Why fans should watch the credits

For Hindi film fans, this is not just trade news. When leading actors turn producers, they can greenlight stories that studios might otherwise skip. That can mean fresher voices, edgier narratives and long-format shows built for binge-watching rather than interval-friendly cinema.

Here is what to keep in mind:

  • Watch the production banner: it tells you who is shaping the story, not just starring in it.
  • Expect high-concept projects where the writing and cast carry the show, not a cameo by the producer.
  • Follow the new writers and directors attached to Ranbir’s slate—they could become the next generation of storytellers.

Streaming also changes the commercial equation. A theatrical film has to recover its budget over a weekend or two; a long-format show can build audience over seasons and travel beyond the box office. That may explain why Ranbir is looking at high-concept ideas rather than traditional star vehicles.

Ranbir the actor is not slowing down

The OTT plans arrive as his biggest film of the year reaches theatres. Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and co-starring Yash and Sai Pallavi, releases on November 5 over the Diwali weekend. Beyond that, he has Love & War, Animal Park and Brahmāstra Part Two: Dev in the pipeline. Dhoom 4 is still only rumoured.

So the next phase could run on two tracks: a star who opens films and a producer who backs long-form stories that do not need him in front of the camera. If that works, it may push more Bollywood names to treat streaming as a serious producing ground rather than a second screen.
