Sai Pallavi: Ranbir Kapoor Has a South Cinema Library in Mind

At the Ramayana audio launch in Chennai, Sai Pallavi said Ranbir Kapoor stays current with Tamil releases and carries a mental library of South cinema.

Sai Pallavi: Ranbir keeps a South cinema library in mind

The Chennai audio launch of Ramayana was meant to put A.R. Rahman’s songs in the spotlight, but it was Sai Pallavi’s warm words about Ranbir Kapoor that ended up travelling the fastest. Speaking on stage on Wednesday evening, the actor described a co-star who quietly keeps score of Tamil cinema and checks in on it like a film fan, not a visiting Bollywood star.

A habit his co-stars notice

According to her on-stage remarks, every time she meets Ranbir, he has already watched a Tamil film that released that week or month. “He has stayed updated,” she said, adding that they have discussed Amaran and that he has also kept up with titles such as Maharaja and Baththa.

Sai Pallavi said Ranbir makes a point to watch the films and pass on his appreciation, even though he does not need to. “It’s like he has a library for them in his mind,” she said. For fans of both Bollywood and the southern industries, that detail is a signal: the actor playing Ram is doing his homework beyond the script.

Why it matters for a pan-Indian epic

Ramayana is built to travel. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, the film puts Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. A cast that spans Hindi, Tamil and Kannada stardom is meant to open the epic to multiple language audiences, and the warmth between the leads is part of that pitch.

It also gives Hindi film fans a different way to think about Ranbir Kapoor. He is usually discussed through performances and box office, but Sai Pallavi’s version of him is a listener who keeps up with regional releases and asks her questions about them. That is exactly the kind of off-screen texture that deepens the on-screen pairing before a single frame is judged.

Sai Pallavi also spoke about Ranbir’s casting with a mix of fan excitement and craft. She referenced his work in films like Animal and Barfi, then said Ram is a restrained character. “He’s got some sort of inner peace in him that just radiates through his eyes,” she said, adding that she was excited to see him perform that way.

The film in brief

  • Release: The first part of Ramayana arrives in theatres on November 5; the second part is slated for 2027.
  • Music: A.R. Rahman leads the album, whose songs Sai Pallavi called the background score of her growing-up years.
  • Cast: Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, with Sunny Deol, Anupam Kher, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi and others in supporting roles.

What to watch next

A.R. Rahman’s music was the scheduled headline for the evening, but the Chennai audience also heard Sai Pallavi describe Yash as an actor Tamil audiences cheer for as though he made his films in their own language. It was a small moment of cross-industry goodwill that fits the film’s larger ambition.

The audio launch may have been about Rahman’s music, but the off-screen equation between the leads is what audiences will carry into November. If Ranbir’s Tamil-film fluency shows up as ease in the film, it could help Ramayana feel less like a Hindi epic with southern stars and more like a genuinely pan-Indian one.
