Salman Signed Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam on Trust, Not Story
KC Bokadia says Salman Khan signed without hearing the script; Shah Rukh Khan watched the Tamil original first. A tale of trust, loyalty and star power.

Two of Bollywood’s biggest stars came to a 2002 blockbuster by completely different roads. Producer-director KC Bokadia has opened up about how Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan joined Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, and the recollections show that casting can sometimes hinge on relationships rather than narrations.
Salman’s yes began with Salim sir
Bokadia told ANI that Salman Khan never heard the film’s story and never saw the Tamil original, Thotta Chinungi. The actor agreed because of the producer’s long association with his father, screenwriter Salim Khan.
“Salman didn’t listen to the story. I signed him because of Salim sir,” Bokadia said.
He added that Salim Khan came to Mehboob Studio and asked for his luck, watched the Tamil film, and said yes. Salman, however, skipped the screening and the narration entirely.
Shah Rukh wanted to see it first
Shah Rukh’s route was the opposite. Bokadia said the two had never met before the offer. The actor was shooting at Filmistan when the producer’s production manager arranged a meeting.
After stepping out, Shah Rukh listened to the pitch and came the next day to watch the Tamil original. Bokadia recalled Shah Rukh’s response: he liked the film but said he did not do that kind of cinema, and agreed to do it only for the maker.
“I don’t do this kind of film. I will only do it for you,” Bokadia quoted Shah Rukh as saying.
Why this throwback matters
The Hindi remake was directed by KS Adhiyaman, the same filmmaker behind Thotta Chinungi, and featured Salman, Shah Rukh and Madhuri Dixit in lead roles, with Aishwarya Rai making a cameo. It released in 2002 and went on to become a box-office blockbuster.
- Salman’s signing was built on a family friendship, not a pitch.
- Shah Rukh needed to watch the source film before agreeing.
- Both paths led to one of the most-watched multi-starrers of its year.
For fans, the story fills in a small but significant detail about how Bollywood’s most famous faces sometimes choose their projects. It also explains the filmi loyalty that can exist behind the scenes, before a single shot is taken.
