Shah Rukh Khan’s King lands record Rs 175 crore overseas deal
Phars Films acquires overseas rights for Shah Rukh Khan's King at a record Rs 175 crore. Here's what the film must earn abroad to turn a profit.

Even as big-budget South Indian films dominate the domestic market, Shah Rukh Khan continues to rule the overseas box office. His upcoming film King is the latest proof. According to a Pinkvilla report cited by The Times of India, Phars Films has acquired the overseas theatrical rights for a minimum guarantee of Rs 175 crore, or over $18 million, a new record for Indian cinema.
Phars is no newcomer to the overseas market. It has worked alongside Yash Raj Films on several titles and independently distributed Prabhas’ Saaho. Until now, YRF had handled the international releases of SRK’s Pathaan and Jawan. The report notes that no previous Indian film had crossed the Rs 100-crore mark in overseas rights, so the Rs 175-crore deal is a clear step up.
What a minimum guarantee really means
A minimum guarantee is essentially a distributor’s upfront bet on how well a film will travel. Because overseas distributors typically keep about 50% of the gross, King must collect roughly $37-40 million, or Rs 350-375 crore, internationally just to break even.
The comparisons that matter for fans and trade watchers alike:
- Pathaan and Jawan: each close to Rs 400 crore abroad.
- Dhurandhar 2: Rs 460 crore internationally.
- RRR: Rs 430 crore internationally.
In other words, this cannot be a movie that simply does well overseas. It has to match SRK’s biggest hits, or better them, for the rights deal to turn profitable.
Who is in King, and when does it arrive?
Directed by Siddharth Anand, King reunites the filmmaker with SRK after Pathaan. The ensemble includes Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Jaideep Ahlawat, Raghav Juyal and Saurabh Shukla, and it marks the first on-screen pairing of Shah Rukh with daughter Suhana Khan, who made her acting debut in The Archies.
What makes the price even more striking is the timing. The deal lands before a single frame is out, and it puts an unusually high floor under the film’s overseas run. A strong start now becomes less about bragging rights and more about basic math.
The film is set to hit cinemas on December 24. For SRK’s global fans, the record price is a show of faith; for the film, it turns the overseas run into a Rs 175-crore question to answer from opening weekend.
