Jailer 2 Eyes Rs 125 Crore Opening Despite Hindi Multiplex Snub
Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 is predicted to open at Rs 125 crore worldwide, but slow Telugu sales and a four-week OTT window may block a record.

Rajinikanth is back as Muthuvel Pandian, and Jailer 2 arrives with two big numbers floating over it: a Rs 125 crore worldwide opening-day forecast and the long-standing Rs 1,000 crore milestone that Tamil cinema has never cracked.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala told India Today Digital that the Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel can “open Rs 125 crore for sure,” with room to climb if the final day of bookings gathers pace. He sees pre-sales at around Rs 60 crore — about Rs 35 crore from India and Rs 25 crore from overseas — and expects the final advance figure to land between Rs 70 crore and Rs 75 crore before the first show. Walk-ins could add another Rs 50 crore.
The comparison that matters
The obvious benchmark is Rajinikanth’s previous release, Coolie, which reportedly opened at Rs 151 crore worldwide. That is the number to beat for one of the biggest opening days in Indian cinema. Bala believes the sequel has a path there: “If the Telugu sales pick up, the film is likely to rake in Rs 150 crore and beat Coolie’s record.”
Where the hurdles sit
The challenge is less about star power and more about distribution. Advance booking is moving quickly in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, Bala said, but the Telugu states have not shown the same momentum. The Hindi market presents a sharper problem: Jailer 2 is not getting a multiplex release in the North because its four-week OTT window is shorter than the eight-week gap multiplex chains have been demanding.
That pushes the Hindi release toward single screens and narrows the film’s ability to reach a wider audience, which matters when the goal is a record opening and the eventual push toward Rs 1,000 crore.
Why the 1,000-crore door stays shut
For context, the Rs 1,000 crore club remains an unbroken frontier for Tamil films. Shankar’s 2.0 collected around Rs 800 crore worldwide; Nelson’s first Jailer and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo each landed near Rs 600 crore. The consistent missing ingredient has been a big North Indian run.
Bala’s blunt take is that the producers should have accepted an eight-week window, at least for the Hindi version. Without that, he argues, the dream may stay just that.
What could change the picture
The release-day timing and word of mouth could still alter the math. Jailer 2 starts early: 4.30 am overseas, 6 am in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana and Karnataka, and 8.30 am in Tamil Nadu. Bala pointed to the first Jailer, which picked up from its second show, as the template.
- Strong first-day response could make multiplexes rethink their window.
- A late surge in Telugu sales could push the opening to Rs 150 crore.
- The Hindi single-screen run may cap the film’s north-India ceiling.
For fans, the Rs 125 crore opening is a powerful start. Whether it becomes a record-setting launch — or a long run toward Rs 1,000 crore — depends on markets outside Tamil Nadu and on whether the film compels audiences to show up fast.
