Jailer 2 stunt director confirms Rajinikanth blast was real
Chethan D'Souza reveals the explosion behind Rajinikanth in the Jailer 2 trailer was a live blast, enhanced only slightly, with more surprises promised.

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 opened in cinemas worldwide on October 15, with early morning shows beginning at 6 am. One of the film’s most talked-about trailer moments was not a piece of CGI trickery, according to stunt and action director Chethan D’Souza: the explosion behind Rajinikanth was a real, live blast.
In an interview with India Today Digital, D’Souza said the blast was “enhanced a little bit,” but the core effect was practical. He added that behind-the-scenes footage will be released after the film opens, and hinted at more surprises inside the movie. “There are more such surprises in the film, not just that blast,” he said.
Action designed around the character
D’Souza explained that Jailer 2’s fights were not designed to be big for the sake of scale. Instead, the action was planned around Rajinikanth’s character, aiming for a larger-than-life effect through restrained movement.
“The idea is to show big things with minimal movement,” he said.
That philosophy matters for a Rajinikanth film, where mass moments often work because they feel like an extension of the star’s persona rather than a generic set-piece.
Clear direction and a comfortable set
D’Souza credited director Nelson Dilipkumar for knowing exactly what he wanted from each action sequence, including the timing of elevation moments and how the music should support them. The collaboration, he said, started with Nelson’s concepts and then grew through D’Souza’s input into something different.
Rajinikanth, he recalled, made the process easier by checking in on his own work. The superstar would ask whether he was performing a stunt correctly or whether the team needed any change.
“Such a big man saying that is very comforting. It is not about big and small; he treats everyone as equals,” D’Souza said.
Why the practical blast stands out
For audiences, the reveal reframes the trailer’s biggest explosion as a physical stunt rather than a purely digital effect. It also raises expectations for the making-of footage that D’Souza says will follow the film’s release. For action fans, the practical blast is a small promise about the film’s texture: Jailer 2 appears to be balancing spectacle with something tactile.
Here is what the interview tells us:
- The trailer blast behind Rajinikanth was a live explosion, only lightly enhanced.
- Fights were written to the character, not simply scaled up.
- More surprises and behind-the-scenes footage are promised after release.
D’Souza’s credits include Aavesham, Bagheera, Max, Bhairathi Ranagal and Kingdom. He founded CF Action Design and co-founded Chaos Faktory, a Bengaluru-based movement and action training facility, and brings more than two decades of martial arts experience to his work.
