Sardar 2 finds a second life on Prime Video

After a rough theatrical run, Karthi's Sardar 2 is finding warmer reactions on Prime Video, with fans praising the spy thriller while still flagging the runtime.

Sardar 2 is finding a warmer audience on Prime Video

The theatrical verdict on Sardar 2 was grim. Karthi’s spy sequel, directed by PS Mithran, was widely criticised for its long runtime, screenplay, music and some visual effects, and it underperformed at the box office. Now that the film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the conversation is shifting in a way that is rare for a film written off in cinemas.

A different audience, a different verdict

Almost as soon as Sardar 2 began streaming on Prime Video, social media filled with viewers asking whether the film had been judged too harshly during its theatrical run.

One viewer posted that the film was “pretty decent and very much watchable,” and added that the only real letdown was the runtime. Another was more direct: “How did Sardar 2 flop? Leaving some visuals like those car scenes, everything was pretty good.”

The praise has landed on three areas in particular:

  • Karthi’s Sardar characterisation: viewers say the way the sequel connects with the first Sardar is a highlight.
  • The action and pacing: some fans call it a fast-paced action thriller that is neatly presented, even while admitting there are flaws.
  • The spy material: the espionage elements and the Sardar character are being cited as the main positives.

The complaints, however, have not disappeared. The lengthy runtime, music and some VFX shots are still being mentioned as areas that could have been improved.

Why OTT changes the calculation

This is not the first time a film has found a warmer reception on streaming after a cold theatrical run. At home, audiences often have more patience for a longer film because they can pause, and the weight of an opening weekend verdict is largely absent. The cost of watching is lower, so the bar for “was this worth it?” is different.

In Sardar 2‘s case, the same runtime complaint is still visible, which suggests the film’s problems were real, but the overall experience is now being weighed more generously. One fan summed up the reappraisal with the line: “Good Movie. Wrong Audience.” Another felt that trimming around 15 to 20 minutes would have made the sequel a much stronger experience.

A second chance, but not a rewrite

The warmed-up response does not erase the theatrical miss, but it does give the team a second window of attention. For fans of Karthi and the first Sardar, the streaming release is a chance to make up their own minds. For producers, the takeaway is practical: when the same runtime complaint follows the film from theatres to OTT, it is worth treating that note as a clear signal for the next cut.
