Mika Singh Seeks Apology After Daler Mehndi’s ₹35 Lakh Gig Row

Mika Singh has demanded an apology from Uttarakhand minister Subodh Uniyal after Daler Mehndi was publicly reprimanded at a New Tehri stage show.

Mika Singh Demands Apology in Daler Mehndi Stage Row

A routine performance at a Uttarakhand tourism fair has blown up into a full-throated argument about how public officials should treat artists. Singer Mika Singh has demanded an apology from state Cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal after the minister interrupted Daler Mehndi mid-performance in New Tehri on Sunday night.

In a post on X, Mika called the minister’s tone “extremely rude and disrespectful” and wrote, “An artist deserves dignity, regardless of the circumstances.” His bigger question was directed at Uniyal: does the state want artists to stop coming to Uttarakhand?

What happened on stage

Daler Mehndi was performing at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair when Uniyal walked up and stopped the set. In clips circulating widely, the minister is heard asking, “You cannot even speak, so how are you going to sing?”—a remark many read as suggesting the singer was intoxicated.

Uniyal later told ANI that Daler “seemed disoriented on stage” and was only lip-syncing. He said the singer had been offered ₹35 lakh to perform but was not singing live. That allegation has not been independently verified.

Mika’s counter: dignity and public office

Mika framed the episode as a failure of accountability, not just stage manners. He argued that artists come to perform, entertain and honour their commitments, and should not face humiliation from a public platform. He also flagged a reported on-stage reference to another singer being beaten earlier, which made the moment feel even more severe.

He asked Uniyal to remember that public office comes with responsibility, humility and accountability, and to address the matter with dignity. Mika was careful to say he has immense love and respect for Uttarakhand, but argued that respect must run both ways.

Why the row has travelled beyond Uttarakhand

  • The minister stopped a headline set in front of a live crowd.
  • He later alleged lip-syncing and disorientation, citing a ₹35 lakh fee.
  • Mika is seeking a public apology and asking whether artists will avoid the state.

Government-backed fairs are a significant stage for touring artists in Uttarakhand. They pull large local crowds and, as this clip shows, they can pull in political attention too.

There are two separate questions here. Was Daler Mehndi’s set up to standard? And was a public microphone the right place to raise it? The first is disputed; the second is what turned a local show into national entertainment news.

The lip-sync tension behind the outrage

Live stage shows often mix live vocals with pre-recorded backing, and audiences disagree on how much lip-syncing is acceptable. What made this incident combustible was the setting: a public official made the accusation on a live mic, in front of a crowd, while cameras were rolling.

That is why the row has outgrown the two men at its centre. It is now a proxy debate about how the entertainment economy treats touring artists—and how institutions should handle a bad performance without making an example of someone in public.

No apology had been reported from the minister at the time of writing. Mika has asked him to reflect and address the matter with dignity. How Uttarakhand responds next may shape whether future stage invitations feel like opportunities or risks.
