After 17 years, R Balki and Vidya Balan reunite for a non-biopic

R Balki confirms his new Tamil film with Vidya Balan is a fun story, not the singer biopic fans guessed. Plot details stay under wraps.

Vidya Balan and R Balki's Tamil film is not a biopic

Seventeen years after Paa, R Balki and Vidya Balan are back on a film set together — only this time the cameras are rolling on an untitled Tamil project. A handful of behind-the-scenes stills from Vidya was enough to turn a quiet production into a full-blown guessing game.

The internet quickly wrote its own story. Because Vidya has often played real-life women on screen, fans assumed the new film would follow the same pattern. Social media soon floated names such as M S Subbulakshmi and Usha Uthup, and some reports suggested the mystery project could trace the life of a famous singer.

Balki clears the air

R Balki, however, says the speculation has nothing to do with the actual script. “It is not a biopic; the buzz is absolutely untrue. In fact, we are working on a fun story,” he told ETimes.

That leaves the plot and Vidya’s character firmly under wraps. What is confirmed is the reunion itself. Their last outing, Paa, released in 2009, starred Amitabh Bachchan and earned praise for its unusual premise and performances. That track record is a big reason why this new collaboration is being watched closely even before a title arrives.

How the rumour spread

  • Vidya Balan shared set photos from an untitled Tamil film.
  • Fans read the stills as clues and assumed a biopic.
  • Names such as M S Subbulakshmi and Usha Uthup began circulating.
  • R Balki denied the buzz, calling the film a fun story.

The biopic assumption is understandable. Vidya’s filmography includes roles based on real figures, and her screen presence often carries a gravitas audiences associate with true stories. But association is not evidence, and Balki’s denial pushes back on a pattern many fans were ready to accept.

For film lovers, the more useful signal is the tone Balki is describing. He has built a career on high-concept ideas, while Vidya moves easily between drama, comedy and thrillers. A “fun story” in Tamil points toward a different energy than the serious biopic fans had imagined.

What this means for fans

The lesson here is simple: a few stills rarely reveal a whole film. Until the title and first official look arrive, watching the early reaction is part of the fun — but it tells you more about audience expectations than about the project itself.

Meanwhile, Vidya is also gearing up for Jailer 2, the action entertainer in which she plays a negative role opposite Rajinikanth. That film is scheduled to open theatrically on October 15, so audiences will get a very different side of the actor before the Tamil project takes clearer shape.
