Trisha in talks to play Jayalalithaa in MGR biopic
JM Bashir is mounting an MGR biopic and has revealed early talks with Trisha to play Jayalalithaa; Karunanidhi and Annadurai also feature.

If there is one decision that can shape a Tamil political biopic before cameras roll, it is casting J Jayalalithaa. For JM Bashir’s upcoming Puratchi Thalaivar MGR, that decision has moved from fan speculation to an early discussion with Trisha Krishnan.
The project in brief
Bashir, who was last seen in Pasumpon Devar, will play MGR — the actor and former Tamil Nadu chief minister whose popularity bridged cinema and politics. The film is planned as a broad account of MGR’s early life, film career and political journey, with shooting expected to begin soon in Ramapuram, Chennai.
Trisha and the Jayalalithaa question
According to a report in Dinamalar, the makers are discussing the role of J Jayalalithaa with Trisha. Bashir has reportedly described her as “a suitable choice” for the part, given how central Jayalalithaa is to MGR’s story and to Tamil Nadu politics. He also mentioned that his daughter and Trisha are friends who are currently working together on a film.
Nothing has been signed, and the casting has not been officially confirmed. If it does happen, Trisha would be stepping into one of the most influential roles in Tamil political history.
Who else is in the story
The film will also feature characters based on political leaders M Karunanidhi and C N Annadurai, with actors still being selected for these and other roles.
- Title: Puratchi Thalaivar MGR
- Lead: JM Bashir as MGR
- Jayalalithaa: Trisha in talks, not confirmed
- Other leaders: Karunanidhi and Annadurai to appear
- Director and music composer: yet to be announced
- Filming: expected soon in Ramapuram, Chennai
Why this casting is the one to watch
MGR and Jayalalithaa shared a notable association in Tamil cinema before they became defining figures in the state’s politics, which means the film’s handling of that relationship will signal how deep the biopic is willing to go. The casting question is already moving: an accompanying poll on who should play Jayalalithaa had drawn more than 5,000 votes and 3,000 shares at the time of reporting.
With the director and music composer still under wraps, the next announcements will be closely followed — particularly the confirmation of who finally takes on Jayalalithaa.
