Ramayana Goes Tax-Free in West Bengal Before November 5
West Bengal has declared Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana tax-free ahead of its November 5 release, cutting ticket costs for festive moviegoers.

West Bengal has made Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana a more affordable festive outing. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the tax-free status during Dussehra celebrations at Central Park in Salt Lake, Kolkata, on October 20, with members of the film’s team in attendance.
The decision lands just before the mythological drama’s theatrical release on November 5, and places the Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash starrer alongside a short list of films that have received similar state-level waivers.
What the tax-free tag means for viewers
For West Bengal audiences, the exemption lowers the effective ticket price by removing the state’s entertainment tax from the admission cost. That matters most during Diwali week, when Indian families plan big-screen outings and premium tickets can stretch the budget.
Adhikari told ANI that the move follows similar treatment for The Kerala Story, The Kashmir Files and The Bengal Files. He said, “The Ramayana film has been made tax-free,” adding that films on Shri Krishna, Arjuna and the Mahabharata would arrive in the days to come.
Why the timing matters
State-level tax exemptions are not just good PR; they change the economics of a movie ticket. A waiver can nudge undecided viewers toward a film that might otherwise feel expensive, especially for a large family group. For a film built on a beloved epic, the lower barrier arrives exactly when the audience is most receptive.
At the same event, Yash—who plays Ravana—made a direct appeal about the scale of the production. He said producer Namit Malhotra had “gambled his reputation and money to put this film on a global platform.” The actor asked audiences not to look for “small faults in the VFX,” warning that losing producers like Malhotra would take the industry backward.
The team and the big-screen pitch
Nitesh Tiwari directs the epic, with Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. Ravi Dubey plays Lakshman, while the ensemble includes Rakul Preet Singh, Kunal Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Faisal Malik in key roles.
- Release date: November 5, in theatres.
- Tax status: Tax-free in West Bengal.
- Core cast: Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman.
Ranbir Kapoor used the occasion to thank Telugu audiences for their love and support, saying he hoped they would enjoy the film on the big screen.
What to do next
If you are in West Bengal, keep an eye on local booking platforms once advance sales open—a tax-free title tends to move faster in its exempt state, particularly during a festive window. For viewers elsewhere, the bigger watch is whether this state-level support and the cast’s public appeals convert into word of mouth once the film opens.
