Prahaar Grosses Rs 23.76 Cr as Avinash Arun Credits Aamir Khan
Avinash Arun says Aamir Khan brought him on after Paatal Lok, and the Rajkummar Rao-led 26/11 courtroom film has reached Rs 23.76 crore.

When Aamir Khan wanted a director for Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam, he did not rely on a traditional pitch. Avinash Arun says the call came because Khan had watched Paatal Lok and believed he had found the right filmmaker. The result is a 26/11 story told through the courtroom, with Rajkummar Rao leading the cast.
A call from Aamir, with a twist
Arun told Variety India that Khan once considered playing public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam himself. When that did not work out, Khan stayed involved in a different role: he reached out to Arun to direct.
“He got me on board because he had seen Paatal Lok and felt I would be the right guy for it,” Arun said. He added that he remained “really, really grateful” for that trust.
The film casts Rao as the lawyer who led the prosecution of Ajmal Kasab after the Mumbai 26/11 attacks. Wamiqa Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sikandar Kher and Ashish Vidyarthi fill out the ensemble.
Courtroom over carnage
Arun wanted to avoid a conventional anti-terrorism film. The events are already widely known, so he moved the tension into legal arguments and procedure.
“Everyone already knows about the case, so I wanted to approach it more like a legal thriller rather than a standard anti-terrorist story,” he told Variety India.
Conversations with Ujjwal Nikam shaped the emotional frame. Arun described the tragedy as collective grief and shared catharsis, and he tried to examine the radicalised mindset alongside the patience a lengthy trial demands.
Box office check
Sacnilk reported that Prahaar earned Rs 60 lakh in India net on its eighth day, Friday, October 23, across 849 shows. That was a 50% drop from Thursday’s Rs 1.20 crore. The worldwide gross has reached Rs 23.76 crore, including domestic and overseas earnings.
- Lead: Rajkummar Rao as Ujjwal Nikam
- Director: Avinash Arun, known for Paatal Lok
- Worldwide gross: Rs 23.76 crore after day eight
Why it matters
The numbers are modest, but the film is also a case study in the changing theatrical market. Arun admitted that thrillers and slice-of-life films face a shrinking cinema window, while single screens still reward masala entertainers.
That is the larger question hanging over the film: can a name like Rajkummar Rao and a director known for Paatal Lok pull audiences into a film whose tension is argument and evidence rather than set pieces? For fans of restrained, intelligence-led storytelling, that makes Prahaar worth watching sooner rather than later.
