Why Yash Chose Ravana: None of Us Are Bigger Than Ramayana

Yash opens up about playing Ravana in the new making-of video, saying no one is bigger than the Ramayana. Ranbir Kapoor praises the portrayal.

Yash: None of us are bigger than Ramayana

Rocking Star Yash is finally explaining why he chose to play Ravana in Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, and his answer is less about stardom than about serving the story.

The makers have dropped “The Making of Ravana,” a 3-minute-48-second behind-the-scenes video that features producer Namit Malhotra, director Nitesh Tiwari, and actors Ranbir Kapoor and Yash. It walks through how the team approached one of Indian myth’s most layered antagonists after the film opened worldwide on 5 November.

The question Yash kept hearing

Yash says his friends and family asked a version of the same question: why play a character audiences have been taught to hate? His answer, in the featurette, is that the Ramayana belongs to everyone involved, and no individual stardom is bigger than the epic itself.

“None of us are bigger than Ramayana,” Yash says.

He also explains that Ravana cannot be reduced to a straightforward villain. Yash describes Rama as the heart and Ravana as the brain, and says the story lives in the clash between mind and heart. He adds that his first conversation with producer Namit Malhotra gave him clarity, and that wearing the crown sealed it: in that moment, he says, he felt like Ravana.

Why the casting had to be larger than life

Malhotra says the role needed an actor with an outsized presence, a strong aura and genuine star power. Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Rama, praises the choice, saying Yash brings a new and complex understanding of the character.

The featurette also widens Ravana beyond the warrior image. Director Nitesh Tiwari points out that Ravana was also a great astrologer and a devoted Shivabhakt, which gives the performance more registers to play.

The cast and the road ahead

The first chapter of the epic features an ensemble built for scale:

  • Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama
  • Sai Pallavi as Sita
  • Yash as Ravana
  • Sunny Deol as Hanuman
  • Ravi Dubey as Lakshman

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, the film is planned as a two-part saga. The first instalment is now playing in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Part 2 is reportedly being lined up for Diwali 2028.
