Baththa heads to Netflix after Rs 33 crore theatrical run

The Vijay Sethupathi gangster drama is set for a five-language Netflix debut on October 29, four weeks after a theatrical run that collected Rs 33 crore.

Baththa streams on Netflix from October 29 after Rs 33 cr run

Vijay Sethupathi’s latest Tamil film is taking the streaming route a month after its theatrical debut. Baththa, directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, will begin streaming on Netflix from October 29, 2026. The film arrived in cinemas on October 1, so the gap between big screen and home screen is barely four weeks.

A second window after a short theatrical run

Despite warm reviews for its direction, performances and music, Baththa’s theatrical total reportedly settled around Rs 33 crore gross, according to Sacnilk. That is a modest figure for a Sethupathi-led drama, but it also means most of the potential audience has yet to watch the film. Netflix’s release puts it in front of viewers who were waiting for a digital option or simply could not catch the Tamil version in theatres.

Five languages, one launch

The film will not be restricted to Tamil. Netflix will make Baththa available in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam alongside the original. It is a practical move for a star like Sethupathi, whose appeal now cuts across industries. The multi-language drop may also help Telugu-speaking fans follow the film in a familiar tongue.

Here is a quick look at the release:

  • Streaming from: October 29, 2026
  • Platform: Netflix
  • Languages: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam
  • Theatrical release: October 1, 2026
  • Reported box office: Rs 33 crore gross

What the film is about

The premise is playful but rooted in fear. A young boy, played by Sai Prithviraj, accidentally locks a feared gangster—played by Vijay Sethupathi—inside a school toilet. When he returns to let him out, fear takes over. That standoff becomes the foundation for a story that moves between comedy and emotional drama, touching on masculinity, patriarchy, redemption and human relationships. Some viewers have already compared its emotional texture to the Tamil film Meiyazhagan.

Alongside Sethupathi and Sai Prithviraj, Baththa features Lijomol Jose, Santhy Balachandran, Ajay Ghosh and Arjun Chidambaram. The music by Sai Abhyankkar has its own life, especially the song Magale, which has been travelling through short videos and reels.

Why the Netflix date matters

A quick digital premiere after a modest theatrical run is becoming a familiar pattern in Indian cinema. For Baththa, the move may be more rescue than afterthought: it lets a well-reviewed film attempt the word-of-mouth it could not fully build in theatres. The five-language presentation means fans have no dubbing wait, and the platform’s reach could stretch the film far beyond its initial Tamil run.

For viewers, the simple takeaway is that a film praised for its unusual blend of comedy and feeling is now easy to sample from home. The only real question is whether the streaming numbers tell a stronger story than the box office did.
