Amitabh Bachchan turns 84: Jalsa handshake moment divides fans

At his 84th birthday at Jalsa, a polite handshake refusal by Amitabh Bachchan split fans. Here’s the context, the reactions, and what’s next.

Amitabh Bachchan’s 84th birthday: the Jalsa handshake moment

Amitabh Bachchan’s 84th birthday has always been a fixture outside Mumbai’s Jalsa, and this year the tradition delivered a fresh, very modern flashpoint: a short video of the actor politely turning down a young fan’s request for a handshake. Within hours, the clip was everywhere, and fans were firmly in two camps.

The moment outside Jalsa

Bachchan turned 84 on Sunday, 11 October, and stepped out to greet fans in a red kurta. He acknowledged the crowd with folded hands and waves, continuing his long-standing birthday tradition. During the interaction, a couple of children appeared to push past security personnel in an attempt to get closer to him. His bodyguards intervened and moved them away.

In the now-viral clip, a female fan asks Bachchan if she can shake his hand. He politely declines and continues greeting the people gathered outside his home. He later poses in front of a huge garland presented by his fans, thanks them for their affection and returns inside.

Why the clip split fans

Part of the audience read the moment as a small kindness that cost nothing. One user wrote, “He could have just shaken hands with her; she came with a lot of hope.” Another put the sentiment in Hindi: “Bacchi se hath mila lete to kya chala jata hai.”

The other side saw it as a matter of personal space. “There was no need to do that,” wrote one supporter, while another asked, “What’s wrong with these people? He is a human being.”

Here is what both sides are really arguing:

  • The warmth argument: a brief handshake is an easy gift to a young fan.
  • The boundary argument: politeness and affection do not create an obligation for physical contact.
  • The safety argument: children had already pushed past security, so his team prioritised control.

The bigger fan-culture conversation

This is not just about one handshake. The Jalsa birthday appearances have become a ritual because Bachchan has made himself unusually accessible over the years. The tension arises when accessibility is treated as a contract: a star must extend every interaction. Boundaries can coexist with gratitude, and a few seconds of clipped video rarely capture the full context of a crowded street appearance.

The industry’s affection for the milestone was still loud. Chiranjeevi, Kajol, Sanjay Dutt, Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Suniel Shetty and Shatrughan Sinha all shared birthday wishes. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wrote, “Happy Birthday, dearest Pa-Dadajiii. Love and God Bless always.”

What’s next for Bachchan

The actor is set to return as Ashwatthama in the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin. Prabhas and Kamal Haasan are expected to feature alongside him, and reports have suggested Sai Pallavi may replace Deepika Padukone, although the casting change has not been officially confirmed. Bachchan has reportedly resumed shooting for the second instalment, which is currently in production.

The takeaway for fans is simple: enjoy the tradition, but do not turn a clipped moment into a referendum on someone’s character. Next year, the gate will open again.
