Javed Akhtar Defends Rashmika but Gets Her Roots Wrong

Javed Akhtar's defence of Rashmika Mandanna's Hindi accent sparked corrections after he called her a Tamil actor; fans say she is Kannadiga with Telugu hits.

Javed Akhtar's Rashmika Defence Draws a Geography Correction

Javed Akhtar stepped in to shield Rashmika Mandanna from criticism of her Hindi pronunciation—and immediately landed in a geography lesson. The veteran lyricist called out what he described as “fake and baseless linguistic superiority,” but his post identified the actor as Tamil, and social media was quick with the correction.

The defence that sparked the correction

Akhtar’s post on X challenged those mocking Mandanna’s accent to try a few lines of Tamil themselves, calling it the oldest spoken language in the world. The sentiment was appreciated, but users pointed out the basic biographical slip: Rashmika Mandanna is Kannadiga, from Coorg in Karnataka, and has built much of her career in Telugu cinema, not Tamil.

“This fake and baseless linguistic superiority is not acceptable,” Akhtar wrote.

Why the correction matters

The online pushback moved beyond a simple name-check. Here is what fans and commentators flagged:

  • Mandanna is from Coorg, Karnataka, and is Kannadiga.
  • Her largest body of work is in Telugu cinema.
  • Tamil being “the oldest spoken language” is itself contested.
  • Some users questioned whether an actor’s dialogue delivery should be criticised at all.

The slip matters because it shows how easily South Indian identities get flattened into one label. In a multilingual industry, that erases the distinct film cultures and languages an actor actually represents.

Rashmika’s own word on the accent

Mandanna addressed the criticism during Koffee With Karan Season 9, where she appeared with her husband Vijay Deverakonda. She said she couldn’t understand why her South Indian accent was treated as a problem when she is from the region herself. She has also said directors repeatedly prefer her own voice when dubbing across languages, even when she offers to step aside.

That makes the backlash feel less about clarity and more about a narrow idea of how Hindi should sound. Her Hindi delivery has been scrutinised again after films such as Animal, Chhaava, Sikandar, Thamma and Cocktail 2.

What to take from the moment

For fans and commentators, the episode is a reminder to verify an actor’s roots before making their identity part of a language debate. For the industry, it is another example of multilingual talent being judged against a single accent standard.
