Nana Patekar Autopsy: Blood Clot Caused Heart Attack at 75
Goa Medical College confirmed a blood clot in the left main coronary artery caused the fatal heart attack. The 75-year-old actor died on October 8.

Nana Patekar’s death now has a clear medical explanation. Goa Medical College and Hospital confirmed on Sunday that a blood clot in the left main coronary artery caused the heart attack that took the veteran actor’s life on October 8. He was 75.
What the post-mortem found
The autopsy recorded the cause as ‘acute myocardial infarction due to left main coronary artery thrombosis’, a condition the report links to atherosclerotic occlusive coronary artery disease and classifies as a natural cause of death. In plain terms, a clot blocked the left main coronary artery, the vessel that supplies blood to a significant portion of the heart muscle.
The report points to atherosclerotic occlusive coronary artery disease as the background condition. In other words, the clot formed on arteries already narrowed by plaque, and the result was a fatal heart attack. Doctors classified it as a natural cause.
Why the medical language matters
For fans, the phrase ‘left main coronary artery thrombosis’ is worth understanding. The left main artery is not a small branch; it feeds a large zone of the heart. A blockage there is serious because the heart loses a lot of its blood supply at once. That explains why a 45-minute CPR attempt was not enough to revive him.
The final hours in Dona Paula
Patekar was at his residence in Dona Paula, near Panaji, in the early hours of October 8 when his caretaker noticed he was unwell and asked for immediate help. An ambulance was dispatched from a private hospital less than a kilometre away. Despite cardiopulmonary resuscitation for nearly 45 minutes, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at 5:10 am.
A timeline of the night and after
- Early hours, October 8: His caretaker called the hospital after noticing Patekar was unwell.
- Within minutes: An ambulance arrived from a hospital less than one kilometre away.
- 5:10 am: He was declared dead after nearly 45 minutes of CPR.
- Sunday: Goa Medical College and Hospital confirmed the autopsy findings.
Final journey with state honours
After the post-mortem at Goa Medical College and Hospital, his mortal remains were flown to Pune. The last rites took place at his farmhouse in Donje village with full state honours. Colleagues have continued to remember his work, with Aziz Mirza recalling how Patekar shaped his role in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman.
The confirmation may also settle the kind of questions that often follow a sudden celebrity death. There is now an official medical record rather than speculation, and fans can focus on the performances he leaves behind.
