Cult day 1: Rs 1.30 crore worldwide, Rs 1.10 crore India gross

Vishwak Sen's directorial debut Cult collects Rs 1.30 crore worldwide and Rs 1.10 crore India gross on day one, with occupancy rising to 29.82% by night.

Cult day 1: Rs 1.30 crore worldwide, Rs 1.10 crore India gross

Vishwak Sen’s Cult, an action slasher and psychological thriller that doubles as his directorial debut, opened to a modest response at the box office on Friday. According to trade analyst Sacnilk, the film netted over Rs 95 lakh on day one across 1,240 shows.

India gross reached Rs 1.10 crore, and overseas added around Rs 20 lakh, taking the worldwide first-day gross to Rs 1.30 crore.

Occupancy climbed as the day went on

Cult was always likely to be a night-driven title, and the opening-day occupancy curve reflects that. The film recorded 19.82% overall occupancy.

  • Morning: 13.55%
  • Afternoon: 15.45%
  • Evening: 16.91%
  • Night: 29.82%

The night-show bump nearly doubles the afternoon figure, which may signal some early word-of-mouth interest, but the opening remains a restrained one.

The Telugu heartland led

Region-wise, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana contributed Rs 1 crore of the opening. Tamil Nadu added Rs 2 lakh, Karnataka Rs 6 lakh, Kerala Rs 1 lakh and the rest of India another Rs 1 lakh. That concentration makes it clear the commercial test begins in the Telugu-speaking market, even though the film has been released in Telugu, Hindi, English, Japanese and Spanish.

A festive clash it cannot ignore

Cult arrived alongside Aadarsha Kutumbam – House No. 47, the Venkatesh Daggubati family entertainer directed by Trivikram Srinivas. That film reportedly collected Rs 16.65 crore worldwide on day one, with India net standing at Rs 9.50 crore. Put next to that, Cult’s Rs 1.30 crore worldwide gross shows how much the title is positioned as a niche, genre-first alternative rather than a festive frontrunner.

Who is behind Cult

Gayatri Bharadwaj plays the female lead, and Tarak Ponnappa appears in an important role. The ensemble includes Murali Sharma, Srikanth Iyengar, Karthikeya, Anirudh Bhaskar, Yagnya Turlapati, Kabeer Bhartiya and Chepuri Vivek.

Tharun Bhascker has written the dialogues, while Ravi Basrur of KGF and Salaar fame is composing the music. Arvind Vishwanathan is the cinematographer, Ravi Teja Girijala the editor and Arvind Mule the production designer.

For Hindi-film followers, the Hindi version of Cult is part of the same multilingual push, making this a south story that could find a second life among genre fans beyond its home market.
