Jailer 2 hits ₹807.25 crore worldwide, a Tamil cinema first

Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has become the first Tamil film to pass ₹800 crore worldwide, reaching ₹807.25 crore in 18 days and beating 2.0's record.

Jailer 2 hits ₹807.25 crore worldwide, a Tamil first

Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has become the first Tamil film to cross ₹800 crore at the worldwide box office. Trade estimates from Sacnilk place the action entertainer at roughly ₹807.25 crore globally as of November 1, its 18th day in cinemas.

For a Tamil title, this is a landmark. Kollywood has been inching toward the ₹800 crore line for years, and the sequel has now turned that chase into history.

How the money adds up

The film is performing both at home and abroad. A quick look at the estimated split:

  • Worldwide gross: ₹807.25 crore
  • India net: ₹456.30 crore
  • Domestic gross: ₹533.75 crore
  • Overseas gross: ₹273.50 crore
  • Tamil Nadu: over ₹190 crore, fourth all-time in the state

Box office reporting often distinguishes between India net and gross because net excludes taxes, while worldwide and overseas totals are gross figures. That is why the domestic gross and overseas numbers together form the larger worldwide total.

In Tamil Nadu, Jailer 2 is fourth among all-time grossers, behind The GOAT, Ponniyin Selvan 1 and Leo, each of which has crossed ₹200 crore in the state.

Which records fell

Before this, Rajinikanth’s own 2.0 held the Tamil worldwide record at a reported ₹723.30 crore. Jailer 2 has now gone past that comfortably, and it has also overtaken the lifetime totals of major Hindi blockbusters such as Aamir Khan’s PK and Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava.

Its overseas total of ₹273.50 crore has nudged past the ₹271 crore international figure for Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2, making the sequel one of the most travelled Tamil films in recent years. More than 3.08 crore people have reportedly watched the film in theatres.

What it means for Tamil cinema

This is not only a star vehicle. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, the sequel pairs Rajinikanth’s pull with a cast that includes Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty and Suraj Venjaramoodu, plus special appearances from Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar and Hrithik Roshan. Anirudh Ravichander handles the score.

The ₹800 crore benchmark matters because it places a Tamil film in the same conversation as big pan-Indian and Hindi releases. It also gives the industry a new ceiling to aim for, and gives the film’s theatrical run a clear narrative: every additional crore widens the record it just created.

With the film still in theatres, the next milestone is not fixed, but the record may have room to grow.
