Why Rajinikanth passed on a supernatural Padayappa 2

KS Ravikumar spent 15 days on a Padayappa 2 story that brought Neelambari back as a spirit, but Rajinikanth wanted a stronger screenplay.

Why Rajinikanth passed on Padayappa 2's spirit story

The wait for Padayappa 2 has taken another turn, not with an announcement but with an explanation. Director KS Ravikumar recently opened up about the sequel he once took to Rajinikanth, and why the superstar chose not to move ahead.

Speaking at an event hosted by Behindwoods, Ravikumar said he spent around 15 days shaping a story before narrating it. His big idea was to bring back Neelambari, the character Ramya Krishnan made iconic in the 1999 film.

Neelambari would have returned as a spirit

The sequel story leaned supernatural. Neelambari dies in the original Padayappa, but Ravikumar’s version would have brought her back as a spirit and pulled her into Padayappa’s world again.

It is the sort of high-concept hook that can look exciting on paper. The challenge is following through. And that is where Rajinikanth paused.

Why Rajinikanth said no

According to Ravikumar, the superstar never dismissed the world or the characters. He pushed for a better script. Rajinikanth’s response, as the director remembered it, was that the team would have to “think much more deeply and develop a stronger screenplay” to impress today’s audience.

That reaction fits the pattern Rajinikanth has set with his recent sequel choices. At the Jailer 2 event, he said he had heard sequel ideas for Baashha, Petta and Padayappa before approving Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer 2 story. Nelson’s narration clicked, and the Padayappa follow-up was set aside.

What it means for fans

The original film, directed by Ravikumar, remains one of their biggest collaborations, alongside Muthu and Lingaa. That legacy gives the sequel serious goodwill, but also high expectations.

  • The pitch: Neelambari returns as a spirit after her death in the original.
  • The time spent: around 15 days of story work before the narration.
  • The outcome: Padayappa 2 stayed on hold and Jailer 2 moved ahead.

So this is not a strict cancellation. It is a reminder that Rajinikanth, even in fan-driven sequel mode, wants the screenplay to justify the return. A well-developed Padayappa 2 could still find its moment; a rushed one will not.

For now, fans can read Ravikumar’s account as a show of respect to the original: better to protect a beloved film than to stretch it thin.
