How the Baahubali Logo Helped RRR Reach Rs 1,230 Crore

Marketing head Varun Gupta reveals why RRR's Hindi posters used the Baahubali logo instead of the title, and how Rajamouli's trust shaped the campaign.

How the Baahubali logo helped RRR reach Rs 1,230 crore

RRR became a global blockbuster, but its Hindi release posed a specific marketing problem. Varun Gupta, who worked on the film’s campaign, has now shared how the team solved it. Speaking on the Everyday Empires Podcast, he said many audiences in the Hindi belt could not tell lead actors Jr NTR and Ram Charan apart. The answer was not to push more cast introductions; it was to borrow a memory the audience already had. The detail is a small but telling case study in how films are sold in India’s multilingual market.

A familiar logo did the introducing

Rajamouli’s previous film, Baahubali, had already been a very big hit in the Hindi belts. The RRR campaign wanted that goodwill to open the door. Instead of writing the title in text, the poster design used the Baahubali logo itself.

Gupta explained that the poster carried the line “from the director of” and deliberately avoided spelling out Baahubali. His reasoning: audiences recall a logo subconsciously, while typography does not carry the same weight. The logo became a shortcut to credibility and scale, and for Hindi viewers unsure about the two leads, the familiar image filled the gap faster than any written description could.

That design choice also made the campaign feel like an extension of a trusted blockbuster, not a completely new pitch.

Trust changed how the team worked

Gupta said S.S. Rajamouli and his son S.S. Karthikeya led the marketing decision-making. They believed in the team’s ideas and approved suggestions without questioning them. That response, he noted, did not make the work easier. It made the team more cautious and accountable.

As he put it, they were the ones who “kept me on my toes” — but in the right way. When leaders trust a team completely, the team often raises its own standards because there is no safety net of approval battles. Every poster, line and logo choice had to be right because it would not be second-guessed later.

What the campaign teaches

  • Use a visual asset the audience already recognises instead of relying on text.
  • Anchor a new title to a past hit with a short qualifier like “from the director of”.
  • Give a trusted team real ownership; accountability rises when there is no one to hide behind.

The payoff was substantial. According to Sacnilk trade figures cited in the report, RRR collected around Rs 1,230 crore worldwide during its theatrical run. The Hindi audience, once unsure about the two leads, had a familiar logo to help them place the film.

What comes next

Rajamouli’s next film, Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in April 2027. Rajamouli is known for grand, globe-trotting filmmaking, and Varanasi is already positioned as his next international-scale release. The question will be whether a new story can build its own recall without leaning on Baahubali.

For fans and marketers alike, the RRR poster is a reminder that sometimes the best introduction is one audiences already know.
