Ranabaali opens at Rs 16.50 crore worldwide, below Kingdom and Liger

Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s period action drama Ranabaali grossed Rs 16.50 crore worldwide on its opening day, Friday, October 16. That is a soft start for a star vehicle of this scale, placing the film below the first-day marks of Vijay’s last two major releases.

Trade figures, first reported by Sacnilk, show India nett collection at Rs 9.25 crore and domestic gross at Rs 10.75 crore. Overseas markets added Rs 5.75 crore, taking the worldwide total to Rs 16.50 crore.

Day 1 by the numbers

  • Worldwide gross: Rs 16.50 crore
  • India nett: Rs 9.25 crore
  • Overseas gross: Rs 5.75 crore
  • Shows: 2,515 across the country
  • Occupancy: 57 per cent overall
  • Footfalls: 711,679

The Telugu 2D version finished at 54.70 per cent occupancy. Night shows led with 67.92 per cent, followed by afternoon screenings at 56.31 per cent, evening at 51.77 per cent and morning at 40.92 per cent. That evening-to-night curve matters: it suggests the audience is showing up after work hours, and it gives the film a base to build on over Saturday and Sunday.

The comparisons that matter

Ranabaali is not starting from the same position as Vijay’s previous releases. Kingdom collected Rs 18 crore nett in India on day one, nearly double Ranabaali‘s India nett, while playing across 4,236 shows to Ranabaali‘s 2,515. Liger, which underperformed, opened at Rs 16 crore nett in India and Rs 24.20 crore worldwide.

So the film is behind both comparisons on worldwide gross. But the show-count gap is the real context: with 2,515 shows against Kingdom‘s 4,236, a direct first-day comparison is not apples to apples.

Why the film still holds interest

Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, Ranabaali is set against the Great Madras Famine of 1876-78 and follows a man who resists British colonial rule. Vijay plays Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, while Rashmika plays his wife, Jayamma. It is their third collaboration after Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade, and their first on-screen pairing since their wedding in February.

The film also marks Vijay’s third outing with Sankrityan after Taxiwaala and Shyam Singha Roy, and it is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y Ravi Shankar under Mythri Movie Makers. Ajay-Atul composed the music.

What to watch next

The opening weekend will decide Ranabaali‘s trajectory. A strong night-show response and the Vijay-Rashmika reunion give it a genuine chance to grow; the softer morning numbers suggest it needs word of mouth to widen the audience beyond the core fan base. Saturday’s hold will tell us whether this is a slow start or a sign of trouble.
