Salman Khan: No Government Pressure on Maatrubhumi Script
Salman Khan dismisses reports of government pressure on Maatrubhumi, says the film follows soldiers and families on both sides; release set for December 4.

Salman Khan has pushed back on the loudest rumour around Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace: that the film had to be reshaped because the government was uncomfortable with its India-China angle. At the film’s trailer launch in Mumbai, the actor rejected that version of events and said the makers changed direction themselves.
Salman’s clarification
Khan called the reports “bakwaas” and said the project was not built as an anti-China statement. “It’s not true at all,” he said. The film, he explained, follows soldiers and what their families go through on both sides of a confrontation. In his words, the only negativity lies in the circumstances, not in the film’s intent.
Why the title changed
The film was earlier promoted as Battle of Galwan, a title tied to the June 2020 clash in eastern Ladakh that killed 20 Indian soldiers. That name fed much of the speculation. Khan clarified that it was never the final title: it had been put on the clapboard as a working label. The team eventually found its new name, Maatrubhumi, in a song by Himesh.
Where the film now stands
Director Apoorva Lakhia had conceptualised an earlier version, Khan said, but the current version centres on the soldier experience rather than a single geopolitical flashpoint. For viewers, that is a meaningful shift. The film can draw on the emotional cost of border conflict without turning into a campaign-style retelling of one clash.
Why this matters for Bollywood fans
Galwan remains one of the most significant military flashpoints between India and China in recent years, and any film borrowing that backdrop invites political reading. The speculation around Maatrubhumi grew precisely because the original title pointed directly at that event. Salman’s public clarification is as much a message about the film as it is about its intended tone: less flag-waving, more family drama.
Before you book December 4
- Film: Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace
- Release date: December 4, after moving from an earlier April slot
- Directed by: Apoorva Lakhia
- Produced by: Salman Khan
- Cast: Chitrangda Singh, Mukesh Rishi, Ankur Bhatia, Zeyn Shaw, Abhilash Chaudhary and others
The simpler takeaway for Hindi film fans: a major star is choosing to tell a border story through families on both sides rather than through a nationalistic lens. Whether that decision connects with opening-weekend audiences will be tested on December 4.
