Scene opens at Rs 34.25 crore worldwide on day one

Suriya and Naslen's Scene opens at Rs 34.25 crore worldwide on day one, beating Vishwanath and Sons by Rs 2.51 crore. Breakdown inside.

Scene opens with Rs 34.25 cr worldwide

A first-day number with weight

Suriya’s latest, Scene, opened in theatres on Friday, 6 November, with a worldwide gross of Rs 34.25 crore. The Jithu Madhavan film, which also stars Naslen, collected Rs 19.15 crore net in India and Rs 22.25 crore in domestic gross. Trade figures put the overseas contribution at Rs 12 crore.

The numbers come from Sacnilk and are still estimates, but the shape of the opening is clear: this is a south-led start, built mostly on Tamil audiences with a useful assist from Kerala.

How the first day broke down

  • Worldwide gross: Rs 34.25 crore
  • India net: Rs 19.15 crore
  • Domestic gross: Rs 22.25 crore
  • Overseas gross: Rs 12 crore
  • Shows: 6,167 across Tamil and Telugu versions
  • Estimated tickets sold: 14,31,494

The Tamil version did the heavy lifting, earning Rs 16.15 crore net from 4,878 shows at 57.1 percent occupancy. The Telugu version added Rs 3 crore net from 1,289 shows at 47.1 percent occupancy. Overall occupancy across the two versions stood at 55 percent.

Where the audience showed up

Tamil Nadu led the state-wise chart with Rs 10.75 crore, or 48.3 percent of the India gross. Kerala followed with Rs 5.75 crore, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together added Rs 3.50 crore. Karnataka chipped in Rs 2 crore, and other Indian markets brought in Rs 0.25 crore.

The format story is also worth noting. The Tamil EPIQ version recorded 82.50 percent occupancy for the day, with night shows touching 93.50 percent. Tamil 2D recorded 61.87 percent overall occupancy, while Telugu 2D was at 44.45 percent. Audiences were clearly most willing to turn up late in the day, which often signals word of mouth doing its job.

The comparison with Vishwanath and Sons

Scene had a stronger worldwide start than Suriya’s previous release, Vishwanath and Sons, which opened at Rs 31.74 crore worldwide. That gives Scene an advantage of Rs 2.51 crore. The new film also leads on India net (Rs 19.15 crore versus Rs 15.35 crore) and domestic gross (Rs 22.25 crore versus Rs 17.74 crore).

One caveat: the older film had the better overseas opening, Rs 14 crore against Scene‘s Rs 12 crore. So the opening-day edge is domestic, not international.

What to watch next

The first-day number is encouraging, but momentum is everything. The night-show occupancy suggests the film is connecting with its core audience, and the Kerala numbers give it a second strong market. If the weekend holds — and the Telugu belt grows beyond day one — Scene can stay ahead of the comparison. If evening energy fades, the lower overseas start will matter more.

For fans heading out, the Tamil version is where the opening energy is strongest, and the EPIQ format has been the fullest rooms so far.
